Go Bike East Dunbartonshire Newsletter Spring 2000

An opportunity on our doorstep!

June 21st will see the opening of the 5000 mile National Cycle Network, of which the nearest section to East Dunbartonshire is the Glasgow to Loch Lomond Path. With a little will-power, East Dunbartonshire could have its very own Cycle Network, linking into the National one.
The development of the Allander (Walk)way into a shared-use path, the provision of a bridge over the Allander at its confluence with the River Kelvin, and an access agreement concerning the former railway line from Bardowie to Balmore would give a continuous off-road leisure route from Milngavie to the Canal at Cadder.
Improvements already planned to the Allander path, Allander Toll (where the path now goes under the road), and at Balmore make this route much more achievable. This highlights the need for the Council to make the correct decision regarding the Auchenhowie Rd junction.

Cycling Liaison Meetings.

The staff changes within the Council caused the postponement of the last meeting between Go-Bike and Council officials. Under current legislation, developers are required to put greater emphasis on access for pedestrian and cycle traffic than for motor vehicles. We are keen to discuss this with the Council in relation to the housing development in Bishopbriggs.

Social Evening

Regular Go Bike! social evenings are held at The Stables. The Stables is located at the crossing of the A803 Kirkintilloch Road and the canal. Non-members welcome. Check this web site or local press for details.
