Meeting Point and Times

Meet at the pagoda at the north end of Bell's Bridge, Glasgow (Streetmap, OS map or aerial photo) unless otherwise stated, at 10am. Rides start at 10am all year round. Rides are generally around 30 miles, although winter rides are shorter. Often there is the option to return by train for a shorter ride. A lunch break is usually taken in a suitable pub or café en route.

Rides are usually on tarmac surfaces (road or path) and suitable for most types of bikes, e.g. tourer, racer, hybrid, mountain bike, but will occasionally feature sections of route on rougher paths - see ride descriptions for details. See Past Cycle Rides for a few example cycle ride routes, based on rides Go Bike has gone on in the past.

Please read this general information about the cycle rides.

Glasgow Fair Weekend Ride 14 to 16 July 2012 ** BOOK NOW! **
Following on from last year’s trip, this summer’s weekend ride will continue up the east coast along the NCN Route 1 from Edinburgh to Aberdeen. We will cover the 170 mile route over three days – Saturday 14th to Monday 16th July (the Glasgow Fair holiday weekend) with overnight stops in St Andrews and Montrose. The route will follow mostly minor roads and designated cycle paths and take us across the Forth Bridge, along the Fife Coastal path to Kirkcaldy before cutting across the east neuk of Fife to St Andrews, through the Tentsmuir forest and across the Tay Bridge to Dundee before hugging the east coast for the remainder of the route to the Granite City. The approximate distances covered will be:-

  • Edinburgh – St Andrews: 55 miles
  • St Andrews – Montrose: 65 miles
  • Montrose – Aberdeen: 50 miles
The terrain will be mostly gentle to undulating – rarely rising much above 100m – and requires a moderate level of fitness and stamina.
As previously the event will be run jointly with the Gay Outdoor Club and to keep the numbers manageable it is proposed to limit the size of the group to 20 this year. Accommodation has been pre-booked at St Andrews Tourist Hostel for the Saturday night and at a selection of guest houses and hotels in Montrose for the Sunday night. In spite of having to go slightly up market for our second night and book three and four star establishments (due to the lack of convenient hostel accommodation anywhere near the Angus coast) it has been possible to keep the cost of the weekend at a reasonable £62.00 per person, including accommodation, breakfasts and a meal at the hostel on the Saturday night.
The cost does not include lunches (which you should bring or buy en route), nor a Sunday night meal (we may eat out in Montrose or possibly in the bar at the Park Hotel, where some of the group will be based), nor travel – you should make your own travel arrangements to get to Edinburgh on the Saturday morning and back from Aberdeen on the Monday evening. Note in particular that cycle spaces on trains are limited and in particular for the return trip from Aberdeen should be reserved in advance. Cycle reservations can now be made online when booking tickets on the East Coast Trains website - even if using First ScotRail services!
You can book your place on the trip now by clicking here or if you just want to register your interest meantime and confirm with payment later, feel free to sign up for the event on Facebook or email Go Bike Weekend Rides to let the organiser know.
All we need now is for the weather to be slightly kinder than it was for last year’s trip from Newcastle to Edinburgh!
