<h2 class="wp-block-heading">As the Euros continue there&#8217;s a rare call-up for SPT to the Digest.</h2>

<p>Glasgow&#8217;s Spaces for People consultation has ended but East Ren&#8217;s marches on. Near their border there&#8217;s a new 20mph zone. A new road and active travel networks in Lanarkshire, &#8216;Discussion&#8217; continues in East Dunbartonshire and more post-match analysis from Dennistoun.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Infrastructure Update</h3>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>It&#8217;s good to see more <a href="https://www.cyclehoop.com/product/shelters-canopies/bikehangar/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bikehangars</a> going in across Glasgow but many are in inconvenient places, like <a href="https://twitter.com/isersmalone/status/1406184015116263427?s=20" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">blocking a filter in the Southside</a> or <a href="https://twitter.com/UrbanistTOC/status/1406931448041463809?s=20" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">near an entrance to Queen&#8217;s Park</a>. <p>The order covers a former brownfield site near the Glasgow boundary with East Renfrewshire. It&#8217;s off Thornliebank Road near the train station and Eastwood cemeteries. See the <a href="https://www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Burnfield-Road-Proposed-20mph-Zone-Area-plan.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Burnfield Road area plan</a> and <a href="https://www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Burnfield-Road-Proposed-20mph-Zone-Boundary.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">site boundary</a> PDFs for exact location.</p>

<p>The <a href="https://www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Burnfield-Road-20mph-Zone-Report.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">report for the Burnfield Rd order</a> says it&#8217;s applying recent policies to set a 20mph limit for a new development (<a href="https://www.bellway.co.uk/media/43732/storey_grove_siteplan_2560pix.jpg" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Storey Grove</a> –&nbsp;apparently before it&#8217;s completed). <p>Deadline for feedback – 9 July 2021.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading" id="one-two">1.2: East Renfrewshire Council – Davieland Road Spaces for People project</h4>

<p>First discussed in <a href="https://www.gobike.org/consultation-digest-local-issue-87-25-may-2021-14094#one-four" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Digest 87, Item 1.4</a>, Davieland Rd is next to Rouken Glen Park in Giffnock. This Spaces for People project includes a temporary bike lane in one direction, bollards to protect a footway and a bike phase at traffic lights. A few GoBike members have been to try it out and reported a few issues with triggering the bike phase at the lights. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" width="525" height="357" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Davieland-Rd_layout.png?resize=525%2C357&#038;ssl=1" alt="Davieland Rd, indicative layout" class="wp-image-14463" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Davieland-Rd_layout.png?resize=600%2C408&amp;ssl=1 600w, https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Davieland-Rd_layout.png?resize=300%2C204&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Davieland-Rd_layout.png?w=1256&amp;ssl=1 1256w, https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Davieland-Rd_layout.png?w=1050&amp;ssl=1 1050w" sizes="(max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px" /><figcaption>Davieland Rd, indicative layout</figcaption></figure>

<p>You can leave feedback about the scheme on the <a href="https://erspacesforpeople.commonplace.is/proposals/davieland-road" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ERC’s Davieland Rd survey</a>&nbsp;(no closing date is mentioned).</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading" id="one-three">1.3: North Lanarkshire Council –&nbsp;East Airdrie Link Road, Stage 2 survey</h4>

<p>This is a trunk road project that will bypass Chapelhall and Airdrie, as seen in <a href="https://www.gobike.org/consultation-digest-local-issue-88-8-june-2021-14260#one-six" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Digest 88, Item 1.6</a>. Active travel links were promised but details are scarce so far, apart from that they may be &#8220;separate&#8221; (possibly though Airdrie). </p>

<p>The road will link to the new Monklands hospital site at Wester Moffat, near Drumgelloch train station. In <a href="https://www.gobike.org/consultation-digest-issue-72-27-october-2020-bike-storage-do-get-your-views-in-to-the-scottish-government-12342" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Digest 72, Item 3.1</a> we published the GoBike response about the hospital consultation, mentioning the on-road section of NCN75 nearby. Word has reached us that paths to improve the area have been discussed. Nothing official to report yet but fingers crossed for the future. </p>

<p>Meanwhile, see the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.northlanarkshire.gov.uk/regeneration-and-investment/glasgow-city-region-city-deal/pan-lanarkshire-orbital-transport-corridor/east-airdrie-link-road/what-are-we-doing-now" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">East Airdrie Link Road, Stage 2 survey</a> to give feedback about its route.&nbsp;</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading" id="one-four">1.4: East Dunbartonshire Council – Active Travel Discussion</h4>

<p>This was in <a href="https://www.gobike.org/consultation-digest-local-issue-86-11-may-2021-13927#one-three" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Digest 86, Item 1.2</a>, including its ‘<a href="https://edc.mapthis.place/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ideas Map</a>‘ for the East Dunbartonshire area. While East Dunbartonshire Council haven&#8217;t completed the Bears Way or done any Spaces for People schemes, Items 3.1 and 3.2, below, show they have done other active travel projects. However, these are still quite a long way from forming a comprehensive network and linking with neighbouring areas like Glasgow or North Lanarkshire. </p>

<p>There are no consultation events just now –&nbsp;the next online ones were due in August/September. See a full list of events and background info on the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.eastdunbarton.gov.uk/active-travel-discussion" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Active Travel Discussion webpage</a>. Closing date – 28 September 2021.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Section 2: Forthcoming Consultations</strong></h3>

<p>None this time.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Section 3:</strong>&nbsp;<strong>Consultation Feedback</strong></h3>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading" id="three-one">3.1 East Dunbartonshire Council – Canniesburn Toll, GoBike response</h4>

<p>First covered in <a href="https://www.gobike.org/consultation-digest-local-issue-86-11-may-2021-13927#one-three" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Digest 86, Item 1.3</a>, there were two design options –&nbsp;one on-road and one on the footway. Both had serious drawbacks and sparked discussion about how the roundabout could be improved. That informed the <a href="https://www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/GoBike-EDC-Canniesburn-Toll-letter-140621.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">GoBike response about Canniesburn Toll</a>, which has now been sent to East Dumbartonshire Council. We&#8217;ll report back if there&#8217;s any response from EDC. </p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading" id="three-two">3.2: Strathclyde Partnership for Transport&nbsp;– Regional Transport Strategy</h4>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="alignright size-large is-resized"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Spt.png?resize=313%2C147&#038;ssl=1" alt="" class="wp-image-6977" width="313" height="147" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Spt.png?w=328&amp;ssl=1 328w, https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Spt.png?resize=300%2C141&amp;ssl=1 300w" sizes="(max-width: 313px) 100vw, 313px" /></figure></div>

<p>Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) is a regional transport partnership, which runs the Glasgow Subway and some specialist bus services. We don&#8217;t often feature SPT, as they&#8217;re not usually the main funders putting forward infrastructure proposals. However, one of their Regional Transport Strategy documents lists the <a href="http://www.spt.co.uk/documents/latest/p180621_Agenda6a.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">active travel projects funded by SPT</a> across the former Strathclyde region (tucked away at Section 5, Table 2a, item&nbsp;5). To save you scrolling, here is the summary… </p>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading"><em>&#8220;</em><strong><em>Actions and Projects:</em> </strong></h5>

<p><em>Support delivery of improved&nbsp;active travel&nbsp;infrastructure and networks across&nbsp;Strathclyde including supporting actions within local authority cycling &amp; active&nbsp;travel strategies</em>. </p>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading"><strong><em>Update and Status:</em></strong></h5>

<p><em>A number of cycling projects have been completed or progressed by local&nbsp;authorities in the region with support from SPT since 2018/19, including:</em></p>

Completion of design phase and partial&nbsp;construction of 2.8km Dundonald &#8211;&nbsp;Barassie path</em>.</li></ul>

<h6 class="wp-block-heading"><em>In 2021/22, SPT will support cycling projects including:</em></h6>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li><em><strong>Argyll and Bute:</strong> Construction of bridge over Geilston Burn (on&nbsp;Helensburgh&nbsp;– Dumbarton route)</em>.</li><li><em><strong>East Ayrshire:</strong> Completion of design phase for Crosshouse Hospital to&nbsp;Dundonald link</em>.</li><li><em><strong>East&nbsp;Dunbartonshire:</strong> Design and construct Kirkintilloch &amp; Lennoxtown&nbsp;local links</em>.</li><li><em><strong>East Renfrewshire:</strong> Design and construct section of A77 Strategic&nbsp;Cycle Corridor</em>.</li><li><em><strong>Glasgow:</strong>&nbsp;Installation of active travel network signage and monitoring&nbsp;equipment</em>.</li><li><em><strong>North Ayrshire:</strong> Design further&nbsp;section of the&nbsp;Brodick to Corrie Cycle&nbsp;Path and&nbsp;construct sections of the&nbsp;Irvine local network</em>.</li><li><em><strong>North Lanarkshire:</strong> Design and construct sections of Croy Station&nbsp;Access Improvements, Motherwell Station Active Travel Links and&nbsp;Ravenscraig Active Travel Link</em>.</li><li><em><strong>South Ayrshire:</strong>&nbsp;South Ayrshire: Completion on the Alloway-Burton&nbsp;Cycle Route, commence Dundonald –&nbsp;Barassie cycle route Phase 1&nbsp;and Cycle-friendly signalisation of B746 Kilmarnock Rd/ Lang Rd/&nbsp;Commonwealth Dr junction</em>.</li><li><em><strong>South Lanarkshire:</strong> Design and construct sections of East Kilbride&nbsp;Active Travel Network, Bothwell-Uddingston NCN connection, Larkhall&nbsp;–&nbsp;Blackwood and Carstairs Junction connections</em>.</li><li><em><strong>West Dunbartonshire:</strong> Design and construct Strathleven link in&nbsp;Dumbarton town centre.&#8221;</em></li></ul>

<p>Glasgow is usually at the front of the queue for Sustrans and other funding so it makes sense that most routes funded by SPT are outside the city. It&#8217;s quite a long list –&nbsp;maybe some food for thought for places to go over the summer!?</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading" id="three-three">3.3 South Lanarkshire Council –&nbsp;Active Travel networks</h4>

<p>Item 3.2, above, mentions <a href="https://www.southlanarkshire.gov.uk/downloads/download/982/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">South Lanarkshire&#8217;s active travel networks</a>. The latest areas to have networks developed were Blantyre/Bothwell/Uddingston; Larkhall and Stonehouse/Strathaven (<a href="https://www.gobike.org/consultation-digest-local-issue-78-19-january-2021-13078#one-three" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Digest 78, Item 1.3</a>). There&#8217;s been a gap in updates on this since invites to the workshops didn&#8217;t reach either of the GoBike reps on South Lanarkshire Cycling Partnership. Luckily, another GoBike member did take part and passed on details. The downside is we&#8217;ve missed the chance to have our say in the discussion and the consultation on the drafts. However, for the record, here are the draft network reports (see p19 for maps).</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li><a href="https://www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Active-Travel-Workshop-Bothwell-Blantyre-Uddingston_lowres-1.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bothwell, Blantyre and Uddingston network report</a>.</li><li><a href="https://www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Active-Travel-Workshop-Larkhall_lowres-1.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Larkhall network report</a>.</li><li><a href="https://www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Active-Travel-Workshop-Strathaven-Stonehouse-and-villages_lowres-1.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Strathaven, Stonehouse and surrounding villages network report</a>. </li></ul>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="alignright size-large is-resized"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Main-St-underpass-Blantyre_1391_1000px.jpg?resize=362%2C272&#038;ssl=1" alt="" class="wp-image-14506" width="362" height="272" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Main-St-underpass-Blantyre_1391_1000px.jpg?resize=600%2C450&amp;ssl=1 600w, https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Main-St-underpass-Blantyre_1391_1000px.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Main-St-underpass-Blantyre_1391_1000px.jpg?w=1000&amp;ssl=1 1000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 362px) 100vw, 362px" /><figcaption>Main St underpass between Blantyre and Hamilton</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>Most of the obvious routes and destinations seem to be covered (but the street names are quite hard to read on all three). A few features don&#8217;t inspire confidence, such as making a &#8216;main route&#8217; of the heavily vandalised Main St (B7012) underpass under the East Kilbride Expressway. Once the networks are finalised, the council should bid for funding to design key routes then progress to construction (as in 3.2, above). </p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading" id="three-four">3.4: Dennistoun Community Council –&nbsp;Further update on Spaces for People scheme </h4>

<p>Last month, Dennistoun Community Council summarised the Spaces for People project that was put into the area (<a href="https://www.gobike.org/consultation-digest-local-issue-88-8-june-2021-14260#three-two" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Digest 88, Item 3.2</a>). This month, Glasgow City Council responded so there&#8217;s a <a href="http://dennistouncc.org.uk/2021/06/11/follow-up-on-spaces-for-people-low-traffic-neighbourhood-scheme-in-dennistoun/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">further Q&amp;A update on the DCC website</a>. </p>

<p>The update also mentions the return of the Dennistoun &amp; Royston Restricted Parking Zone and the new Dennistoun, Riddrie &amp; Carntyne &#8216;Liveable Neighbourhood&#8217; proposal. In the last few days, an old <a href="https://www.glasgowtimes.co.uk/news/19382527.bid-drop-east-end-road-project-due-climate-emergency-concerns-fails/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">proposal has reappeared for a dual carriageway past Alexandra Park</a>, between Dennistoun and Riddrie. So, there should be plenty to talk about in the near future. </p>

<p>Glasgow City Council has announced its consultation on all the city&#8217;s Spaces for People projects. So, the post-election lull is probably over now.</p>

<p>East Renfrewshire also have a Spaces for People consultation. East Dumbartonshire have a few on the go and North Lanarkshire have a roundabout design that makes Canniesburn Toll look good. </p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading" id="one-one">1.1: North Lanarkshire Council –&nbsp;Ravenscraig Infrastructure Access (South) planning application</h4>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="525" height="371" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/RIA-NMU-diagram-2021.png?resize=525%2C371&#038;ssl=1" alt="" class="wp-image-14156" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/RIA-NMU-diagram-2021.png?resize=600%2C424&amp;ssl=1 600w, https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/RIA-NMU-diagram-2021.png?resize=300%2C212&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/RIA-NMU-diagram-2021.png?w=926&amp;ssl=1 926w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px" /><figcaption>&#8216;Non-Motorised Users&#8217; (NMU) access to Airbles Rd proposed roundabout – staggered crossings clearly prioritise motor vehicles over pedestrians or cyclists</figcaption></figure>

<p>Last covered in <a href="https://www.gobike.org/consultation-digest-local-issue-75-8-december-2020-12699#one-two" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Digest 75, Item 1.2</a> (when it seemed to be RAI, now RIA). This planning application is part of a City Deal programme to link the M74 and M8 using a dual carriageway right through the middle of Motherwell. This southern section will widen Airbles Rd, add a massive signalised roundabout and an &#8216;underbridge&#8217; to cross the railway into the Ravenscraig site. Despite most of the site being empty, no segregated cycleway is proposed there, just a shared footway. </p>

<p>The gigantic 100m footprint of the roundabout could easily have included a segregated cycleway but hasn&#8217;t. The angle of staggered crossings on most arms of the roundabout show that pedestrians are expected to make long detours. It will create a black hole for active travel in this part of Motherwell for decades to come. The Canniesburn Toll plans (below) look enlightened by comparison.</p>

<p>GoBike will be objecting to the scale of the roundabout and the lack of segregated cycling provision throughout. If you ever cycle around North Lanarkshire please consider doing the same. See the <a href="https://eplanning.northlanarkshire.gov.uk/online-applications/applicationDetails.do?activeTab=documents&amp;keyVal=QSB8NQBAIBB00" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">planning application</a> (look for &#8216;Windmillhill street junction nmu provision&#8217; and plan documents). Closing date is Bank Holiday Monday 31 May. </p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading" id="one-two"><br>1.2: East Dunbartonshire Council –&nbsp;Canniesburn Toll Signalisation Study</h4>

<p>As covered last time in <a href="https://www.gobike.org/consultation-digest-local-issue-86-11-may-2021-13927#one-three" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Digest 86, Item 1.3</a>, this major junction overhaul near Bearsden does at least include options for a cycle path. However, one option has a serious &#8216;left hook&#8217; risk and the other involves waiting at several staggered crossings. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="525" height="296" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Canniesburn-image15lq_1620058231952.png?resize=525%2C296&#038;ssl=1" alt="Canniesburn Toll option 1" class="wp-image-13936" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Canniesburn-image15lq_1620058231952.png?resize=600%2C338&amp;ssl=1 600w, https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Canniesburn-image15lq_1620058231952.png?resize=300%2C169&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Canniesburn-image15lq_1620058231952.png?w=960&amp;ssl=1 960w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px" /><figcaption>Canniesburn Toll option 1 –&nbsp;&#8216;left hook&#8217; risk where bike symbol is painted.</figcaption></figure>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading" id="one-three">1.3: Glasgow City Council – Spaces for People survey </h4>

<p>In the last Digest we thought we might get a consultation about the temporary Spaces for People &#8216;pop-up lanes&#8217; in Pollok. Instead, we got a consultation about every SfP project in the city. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="525" height="394" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Kelvin-Way-cyclists_2049_1200px.jpg?resize=525%2C394&#038;ssl=1" alt="Cyclists entering Kelvin Way cycle lanes" class="wp-image-15515" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Kelvin-Way-cyclists_2049_1200px.jpg?resize=600%2C450&amp;ssl=1 600w, https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Kelvin-Way-cyclists_2049_1200px.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Kelvin-Way-cyclists_2049_1200px.jpg?w=1200&amp;ssl=1 1200w, https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Kelvin-Way-cyclists_2049_1200px.jpg?w=1050&amp;ssl=1 1050w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px" /><figcaption><em>Kelvin Way planters and cycle lanes</em></figcaption></figure>

<p>There is a wide range of projects from &#8216;soft segregated&#8217; lanes and widened footways to attempts at Low Traffic Neighbourhoods (now &#8216;People Friendly Streets&#8217;). GCC has split these into headings like &#8216;<a href="https://www.glasgow.gov.uk/26008" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">City Centre</a>&#8216;, &#8216;<a href="https://www.glasgow.gov.uk/26009" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Neighbourhoods</a>&#8216;, &#8216;<a href="https://www.glasgow.gov.uk/26208" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">School Car Free Zones</a>&#8216; and &#8216;<a href="https://www.glasgow.gov.uk/26010" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Pop-up Cycle Lanes</a>&#8216;</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="525" height="394" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/George-Sq-planters_2076_1200px.jpg?resize=525%2C394&#038;ssl=1" alt="George Square planters" class="wp-image-15517" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/George-Sq-planters_2076_1200px.jpg?resize=600%2C450&amp;ssl=1 600w, https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/George-Sq-planters_2076_1200px.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/George-Sq-planters_2076_1200px.jpg?w=1200&amp;ssl=1 1200w, https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/George-Sq-planters_2076_1200px.jpg?w=1050&amp;ssl=1 1050w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px" /><figcaption><em>George Square planters</em></figcaption></figure>

<p>It goes without saying we want as much of the temporary infrastructure to be made permanent as possible. So, it&#8217;s important there&#8217;s a good response to the survey. Each SfP measure has its own multiple choice question (and space to comment) so it&#8217;s easier to fill in than many council consultations. </p>

<p>See <a href="https://www.glasgow.gov.uk/spacesforpeople" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">GCC&#8217;s overview</a> and the <a href="https://survey123.arcgis.com/share/36b5dbb0de6e4ecca7e74606c8b9f835" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">GCC SfP survey</a>. Blurb says an &#8220;independent review will take place in the summer&#8221; so we might not have that long to respond.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading" id="one-four">1.4: East Renfrewshire Council – Davieland Rd, Giffnock Spaces for People project</h4>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="525" height="248" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Davieland-Rd-ScreenShot-2021-05-25.jpg?resize=525%2C248&#038;ssl=1" alt="Davieland Rd before/after" class="wp-image-14168" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Davieland-Rd-ScreenShot-2021-05-25.jpg?resize=600%2C283&amp;ssl=1 600w, https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Davieland-Rd-ScreenShot-2021-05-25.jpg?resize=300%2C142&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Davieland-Rd-ScreenShot-2021-05-25.jpg?w=1026&amp;ssl=1 1026w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px" /><figcaption>The proposal reveals how a cycle lane could be created uphill with parking and a buffer downhill</figcaption></figure>

<p>Another Spaces for People consultation but for Giffnock instead of Glasgow. This is focused on one place –&nbsp;Davieland Rd next to Rouken Glen Park. The project aims to deal with road safety and accessibility issues from bad parking to speeding. </p>

<p>The proposals would create an uphill cycle lane (with &#8216;light segregation&#8217;) and remove the centre line of the road. It would add bollards and a buffer strip for parking on the downhill side of the road. It means cycling downhill with traffic –&nbsp;easier than uphill but it may not appeal to less confident cyclists (who may prefer the park).</p>

<p>See <a href="https://erspacesforpeople.commonplace.is/proposals/davieland-road" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ERC&#8217;s Davieland Rd survey</a> –&nbsp;no closing date is mentioned. </p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading" id="one-five">1.5: Glasgow City Council – Maryhill Road/North Woodside Road/Hopehill Road (Traffic Regulation) Order</h4>

<p>As covered in the last Digest (<a href="https://www.gobike.org/consultation-digest-local-issue-86-11-may-2021-13927#one-one" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">86, 1.1</a>) but not very well according to some comments. The council&#8217;s drawing for the TRO caused a lot of confusion as it missed out the accompanying pedestrian crossings. These had already appeared in the Connecting Woodside consultation, which this junction was part of. It would have made sense to include them.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="525" height="295" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Maryhill-Rd-junct-CW.jpeg?resize=525%2C295&#038;ssl=1" alt="" class="wp-image-14172" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Maryhill-Rd-junct-CW.jpeg?resize=600%2C337&amp;ssl=1 600w, https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Maryhill-Rd-junct-CW.jpeg?resize=300%2C169&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Maryhill-Rd-junct-CW.jpeg?w=1334&amp;ssl=1 1334w, https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Maryhill-Rd-junct-CW.jpeg?w=1050&amp;ssl=1 1050w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px" /><figcaption>Connecting Woodside consultation page showing Maryhill junction crossings –&nbsp;N Woodside Rd may vary</figcaption></figure>

<p>That was why the TRO wanted to ban cyclists turning from the crossing onto Maryhill Rd (as pedestrians could also be crossing at the same time). However, GoBike still doesn&#8217;t agree with the ban. Similar layouts seem to be used on other Connecting Woodside junctions on Garscube Rd so the principle may apply there too. As for how it will work in practice, that very much remains to be seen.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="525" height="317" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Maryhill-Rd-N-Woodside-Rd_Plan-TRO_1200px.png?resize=525%2C317&#038;ssl=1" alt="Maryhill Rd junction TRO drawing" class="wp-image-13944" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Maryhill-Rd-N-Woodside-Rd_Plan-TRO_1200px.png?resize=600%2C362&amp;ssl=1 600w, https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Maryhill-Rd-N-Woodside-Rd_Plan-TRO_1200px.png?resize=300%2C181&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Maryhill-Rd-N-Woodside-Rd_Plan-TRO_1200px.png?w=1011&amp;ssl=1 1011w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px" /><figcaption>The &#8216;minimalist&#8217; TRO drawing, which caused the confusion</figcaption></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Section 3:</strong>&nbsp;<strong>Consultation Feedback</strong></h3>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">3.1: Glasgow City Council – Byres Road (20mph Speed Limit Zone) Order</h4>

<p>This order was proposed way back in late 2019 (first mentioned in a <a href="https://www.gobike.org/consultation-extra-byres-road-glasgow-not-1-not-2-but-3-traffic-regulation-orders-9337" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Consultation Extra</a>). GoBike expressed full support for it in early 2020. The council recently replied to acknowledge our support. GCC said: <em>&#8220;This TRO will implement the correct signage as well as 20mph roundels marked on the carriageway at regular intervals, making the order fully enforceable.&#8221;</em></p>

<p>They also gave a brief update about the other two TROs: <em>&#8220;the Byres Road and Hillhead Traffic Regulation Orders, …are still under review and will be responded to in due course.&#8221;</em> Hillhead TRO is about parking controls and the Byres Rd TRO is about the segregated cycleways on Byres Rd (and Church St). </p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading" id="three-two">3.2: Active Travel Academy –&nbsp;Reporting collisions and road deaths guidelines</h4>

<p>This item was first covered back in <a href="https://www.gobike.org/consultation-digest-issue-71-13-october-2020-how-do-we-talk-about-cycling-and-where-do-we-store-our-bikes-12249" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Digest 71, Item 1.3</a>. <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Junctions squinty and scary plus permanent and pop-up lanes.</h2>

<p>Around the north of the city, plans for Maryhill Road&#8217;s squinty crossing are dwarfed by proposals for Canniesburn Toll roundabout in East Dumbartonshire. </p>

<p>In the city centre, another Bank Holiday building fire means the road is fenced off on High St at the junction of George St/Duke St. </p>

<p>The Scottish Parliament election has passed but it&#8217;s still a bit quiet on the consultations front. However, there are plenty of temporary and permanent projects going on so we have another Infrastructure Update. Most of them are in the city but East Kilbride is also getting in on the Spaces for People action. </p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading" id="one-one">1.1: Glasgow City Council – Maryhill Road/North Woodside Road/Hopehill Road (Traffic Regulation) Order 2021</h4>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="525" height="317" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Maryhill-Rd-N-Woodside-Rd_Plan-TRO_1200px.png?resize=525%2C317&#038;ssl=1" alt="" class="wp-image-13944" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Maryhill-Rd-N-Woodside-Rd_Plan-TRO_1200px.png?resize=600%2C362&amp;ssl=1 600w, https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Maryhill-Rd-N-Woodside-Rd_Plan-TRO_1200px.png?resize=300%2C181&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Maryhill-Rd-N-Woodside-Rd_Plan-TRO_1200px.png?w=1011&amp;ssl=1 1011w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px" /></figure>

<p>This traffic order has a long title for a short stretch of junction. It creates a diagonal cycle crossing on Maryhill Rd between the two filtered sections of N Woodside Rd. This is part of the wider <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.glasgow.gov.uk/article/21802/Connecting-Woodside" target="_blank">Connecting Woodside</a> project (which is installing other squinty crossings on Garscube Rd). </p>

<p>The accompanying report says it includes <em>&#8220;the installation of a signalised pedestrian and cycle crossing at the junction of Maryhill Road, North Woodside Road and Hopehill Road&#8221;</em>. It also restricts people cycling on the crossing from turning onto Maryhill Rd midway across. Presumably, in an effort to protect pedestrians who may be crossing alongside bikes. </p>

<p>The eastern side will have a 2-way cycle carriageway (according to the very small annotation, above). The order also prohibits motor vehicles from using the new cycle carriageway (the current road has been used for car parking). </p>

<p>There are the usual documents: <a href="https://www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Maryhill-Rd-N-Woodside-Rd_Plan-TRO.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">TRO plan</a>, <a href="https://www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Maryhill-Rd-N-Woodside-Rd_Draft_Report.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">TRO report</a>, <a href="https://www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Maryhill-Rd-N-Woodside-Rd_TRO-Press-Notice.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">TRO press notice</a> and (short) <a href="https://www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Maryhill-Rd-N-Woodside-Rd_Statement_of_Reasons.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">TRO statement of reasons</a>. <h4 class="wp-block-heading" id="one-two">1.2:&nbsp;East Dunbartonshire Council – Active Travel Discussion (11 May –&nbsp;28 Sept)</h4>

<p>This item came up just before publication and we&#8217;ll no doubt have more to say about it. However, for now, we&#8217;ll just highlight the online events starting on 18 May (for the Lennoxtown, Milton of Campsie, Haughhead and Clachan of Campsie areas). There are about a dozen online events in the next few months for different areas (using MS Teams). Paper forms are also available from local libraries.</p>

<p>See a full list of events and background info on the <a href="https://www.eastdunbarton.gov.uk/active-travel-discussion" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Active Travel Discussion webpage</a>. EDC have set up an <a href="https://edc.mapthis.place/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">online map</a> to gather suggestions, with links to highlight paths, etc. in the area. This consultation will feed into a new Active Travel Strategy later in the year. </p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading" id="one-three">1.3:&nbsp;East Dunbartonshire Council – Canniesburn Toll Signalisation Study</h4>

<p>Canniesburn Toll is a main junction between Bearsden and Glasgow, which links Switchback Rd and Drymen Rd to the A81 (Maryhill Rd/Milgavie Rd). East Dunbartonshire Council is going to add traffic lights and pedestrian crossings around the roundabout itself. At the same time EDC are proposing to add a cycle lane (using space gained by removing pavement around the centre of roundabout). </p>

<p>There are two options being put forward for the bike lane –&nbsp;one on the carriageway and one on the footway. While it&#8217;s good that EDC is looking at cycling infrastructure again (after ignoring Spaces for People), there are some obvious issues with both options. </p>

<p>Option 1, on the carriageway, seems to give priority for people cycling round the edge of the roundabout. However, there&#8217;s an obvious <a href="https://twitter.com/OConnorOisin/status/1391700806907334656?s=20" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">risk of a &#8216;left hook&#8217; collision, when cycling ahead from cars turning left across your path</a>. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="525" height="296" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Canniesburn-image15lq_1620058231952.png?resize=525%2C296&#038;ssl=1" alt="Canniesburn Toll, Option 1" class="wp-image-13936" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Canniesburn-image15lq_1620058231952.png?resize=600%2C338&amp;ssl=1 600w, https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Canniesburn-image15lq_1620058231952.png?resize=300%2C169&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Canniesburn-image15lq_1620058231952.png?w=960&amp;ssl=1 960w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px" /><figcaption>Canniesburn Toll, Option 1 –&nbsp;carriageway lane with priority but also &#8216;left hook&#8217; risk</figcaption></figure>

<p>Option 2, on the footway, should be safer but slower with multiple waits at traffic lights to cross each arm of the roundabout. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="525" height="296" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Canniesburn-looking_to_macfarlane_roadlq_1620125217927.png?resize=525%2C296&#038;ssl=1" alt="Canniesburn Toll, Option 2" class="wp-image-13937" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Canniesburn-looking_to_macfarlane_roadlq_1620125217927.png?resize=600%2C338&amp;ssl=1 600w, https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Canniesburn-looking_to_macfarlane_roadlq_1620125217927.png?resize=300%2C169&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Canniesburn-looking_to_macfarlane_roadlq_1620125217927.png?w=960&amp;ssl=1 960w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px" /><figcaption><em>Canniesburn Toll, Option</em> 2 –&nbsp;footway lane is out of traffic but would mean waiting at crossings</figcaption></figure>

<p>It&#8217;s not clear if either option is trying to recreate a <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://bicycledutch.wordpress.com/2015/10/13/explaining-the-dutch-roundabout-abroad/" target="_blank">Dutch roundabout</a>, which tend to be smaller, single-lane roundabouts with a cycle lane in a separate ring outside it (leaving a gap for cars to stop on each arm). There may not be enough space all the way around the roundabout to add bike lanes further out. However, there is a huge area in the middle of it.</p>

<p>The <a href="https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/01510c7eb11b474eb1bff3f62dfcf0cf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Canniesburn Toll consultation website</a> has background info and a link to the <a href="https://survey123.arcgis.com/share/?open=web&amp;embed=fullScreen&amp;id=63ec6e8609af4ff0a484991db4ff5f36&amp;hide=navbar,footer,theme" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">survey</a>, which takes general feedback and for each option. It&#8217;s apparently had a few technical issues which the consultants (Stantec) say are being resolved. If you have any issues with it you could try emailing <a href="mailto:canniesburntoll@stantec.com">canniesburntoll@stantec.com</a>. There&#8217;s no obvious closing date for this one. <p>First covered in&nbsp;<a href="https://www.gobike.org/consultation-digest-local-issue-81-2-march-2021-13315#one-nine" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Digest 81, Item 1.9</a>, the GUSM74 skate park would transform an area under the motorway near West St underground station. The&nbsp;<a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/glasgowurban" target="_blank">GUSM74 survey</a>&nbsp;is still open for BMX riders, skaters, or their families, to have their say.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Section 2: Forthcoming Consultations</strong></h3>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading" id="two-one">2.1: Glasgow City Council –&nbsp;Pollok pop-up lanes consultation (Spaces for People)</h4>

<p>The city council added pop-up cycle lanes in Pollok on Braidcraft Rd and Brockburn Rd (as mentioned in the Spaces for People Update in <a href="https://www.gobike.org/consultation-digest-local-issue-84-13-april-2021-13767" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Digest 84</a>). As in other areas, the new lanes used &#8216;soft segregation&#8217; (black &amp; white &#8216;zebras&#8217;). They generated a lot of discussion on social media, especially Facebook. A <a href="https://www.facebook.com/CllrDavidMcDonald/posts/3777568095675219" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Facebook post by Cllr David McDonald</a> talked about a future GCC consultation. It was apparently due to start on 7 May but there doesn&#8217;t seem to be any further information so far. </p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Section 3:</strong>&nbsp;<strong>Consultation Feedback</strong></h3>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading" id="three-one">3.1: Glasgow City Council –&nbsp;East City Way Phase 1 (London Dr to Daldowie Rd) Order 2021</h4>

<p>This was covered in <a href="https://www.gobike.org/consultation-digest-local-issue-80-16-february-2021-13179#one-five" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Digest 80, Item 1.5</a> with further responses in <a href="https://www.gobike.org/consultation-digest-local-issue-82-16-march-2021-13425#three-one" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Digest 82, 3.1</a>. GCC have emailed to confirm it&#8217;s going ahead as proposed. Hopefully, this and the image in the Infrastructure Update, mean the first phase is just about complete. </p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading" id="three-two">3.2: Glasgow City Council –&nbsp;London Road and Hamilton Road (30mph Speed Limit) Order 2021</h4>

<p>This order has gone hand-in-hand with the above since <a href="https://www.gobike.org/consultation-digest-local-issue-80-16-february-2021-13179#one-six" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Digest 80, Item 1.6</a>. It&#8217;s also been approved. Both orders were made on 30th April 2021 with adverts in the Evening Times on 6th May 2021.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading" id="three-three">3.3: Multiplex –&nbsp;Glasgow Uni campus, May newsletter</h4>

<p>Quick off the mark this month are Multiplex with their <a href="https://www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Glasgow-Uni-May-2021.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">May newsletter</a> about the Glasgow Uni campus redevelopment. </p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading" id="three-four">3.4: Urban Roots –&nbsp;Malls Mire,&nbsp;April Newsletter</h4>

<p>First covered in <a href="https://www.gobike.org/consultation-digest-local-issue-74-24-november-2020-12604#three-four" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Digest 74, Item 3.4</a>, we&#8217;re a wee bit late with the <a href="https://www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Malls-Mire-Newsletter-April-2021.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">April newsletter</a>. Apparently some paths may be rerouted to allow work to take place. On the plus side, the bike pump track is looking good!</p>
