Further consultation on a path between Tarbert’s ferry terminal, on Loch Fyne, across the top of the Kintyre peninsula to Kennacraig ferry terminal/Whitehouse. There are concept designs for the route between the two, alongside the A83. This is a Stage 2 consultation (Stage 1 was in 2024). There was an in-person consultation event in Tarbert that has passed. This path to the south-west seems to be separate from the project to create a path to the north-east (Tarbet to Inverarnan).
Links: Tarbert to Whitehouse Community Path (Engagement Hub), large plan image (ZoomHub), Tarbert–Whitehouse survey, Feedback Map and ABC website page.
Deadline: Tuesday 30 September 2025 (17.00).

LDP3 – Call for Ideas and Sites Consultation

Part of the Council’s continuing work to prepare its next Local Development Plan (LDP). The plan will guide what land in East Dunbartonshire is used for development. The call for ideas is about planning policy and spatial strategy. The call for sites is for general ideas or developers with plans about how to develop areas of land. The call for sites may be an opportunity to lobby for active travel routes.
Two drop-in information sessions (Kirkintilloch/Milngavie) have already passed.
Links: LDP3 web page, LDP3 call for ideas survey and LDP3 call for sites survey.
Deadline: Monday 15 September 2025.

Proposed Installation of Road Humps – Kirn Drive, Gourock (ETRO)

Following previous consultation, Inverclyde Council propose traffic calming on Kirn Drive in Midton, Gourock. The road would be made one-way between Arran Rd in east and Divert Rd in west with humps added. Also, Staffa Street would be made one-way from Ivy Crescent to Kingsway east.
Update on Hamilton Town Centre Masterplan

An update from South Lanarkshire Council is mostly about progress with property. Sadly, this includes demolishing the facade of the former Vogue Bingo hall on Keith St (apparently as it’s now unsafe). Other negative news includes the trial reintroduction of cars on Quarry St being made permanent. Quarry St used to be pedestrianised – see featured image at top of post from 2012 (with Vogue building in background). Car parking had crept up since the pandemic (leading to the trial). There should be disabled parking and it always had some access for loading, etc. However, officially opening the street to all cars removes safe space for walking, wheeling and cycling (even if it’s still one-way and not really a through road).

Also, work is starting to look at renewing the Duke St multi-storey car park – it’s due to be demolished (apart from the section under Wyler Tower!). However, the plan is to build a new multi-storey in the same place, on the wrong side of the road from the shops! It could potentially have been moved behind Quarry St, in the footprint of the current Regent Shopping Centre, if road access had been adjusted (see alternative plans, ignored by SLC). There is due to be an improved pedestrian/cycle path behind the Duke St car park, to Hamilton Central station, but it doesn’t seem like the rest of the town centre will be very cycle-friendly.

Local Action Fund

The Local Action Fund is £50,000 for each of the 20 council wards in South Lanarkshire. Several projects have already been awarded but there is funding remaining in some wards. There doesn’t seem to be a formal consultation or application process – constituents have to contact their councillors, who will decide where the remaining funds go.

For example, Rutherglen South, Ward 11, reportedly has £23,200 still to be spent by Councillors Robert Brown (who has attended GoBike hustings in the past), Margaret Cowie and Carol Nugent. Could some of the funding go towards improving local active travel routes?

We got a view of the Quarriers Village and proceeded on to Kilmacolm for lunch in the cosy (compared to outside) Carriages pub.

Then it was on towards our goal, but in the open countryside, the wind and the rain got the better of us and we headed down to Port Glasgow for the train home. We certainly enjoyed the sun – when it chose to appear, and Andy did say that he will re-programme this route for another time

The next ride will be on Sunday 06 July, heading south to Calderglen Country Park and East Kilbride. Details are here

On our way out of Glasgow we will join up with NCN route 75 through Paisley and follow this to Kilmacolm. After lunch (bring your own or join others in a cafe), we will continue along the path to Port Glasgow, but leave it on the edge of the town for a hilly detour to overlook the lower River Clyde.

We will then descend into Greenock for the train home. However, if there is sufficient interest, there will be an optional detour to Murdieston Park and Reservoirs to see parts of the town we otherwise would never have cause to visit.
30 miles or so for the ride.

See you there!

Avenues and corridors…

Major changes are proposed for Cowcaddens Rd/Dobbie’s Loan (visual of Port Dundas Rd, above). Another Avenues project on Pitt St has a Traffic Regulation Order, as does the East City Way on London Rd. It’s last call for St George’s Rd but more from Connecting Woodside in Glasgow’s TROs.

East Renfrewshire’s Local Action Plans close soon but Balgray Connections is open a bit longer. East Dunbartonshire have extended one consultation and started a major one about the Springburn Rd/Kirkintilloch Rd ‘corridor’. Also, good news from Inverclyde.

1.1: St George’s Road – Phase 2

Council: Glasgow City.
Area: Part of the wider Connecting Woodside project.
Subject: St George’s Rd, including remodelling the dangerous Charing Cross junction. A 2-way protected cycletrack would run from there alongside the M8 (with two options for the crossing at Phoenix Rd). It then crosses from the south to north side of the road at Clarendon Place, which would be stopped up at its south end (and re-opened at north). The route would continue on the north side of St George’s Rd to meet the protected lane already built at Garscube Rd. Also, it would have new pedestrian crossings at Woodside Library, N Woodside Rd and St George’s in the Fields.
Featured: Digest 121, Item 1.13.
Website links: St George’s Rd consultation (foot of page), storymap and survey.
Deadline: 14 November 2022.

1.2: Giffnock Local Action Plan map

Council: East Renfrewshire.
Subject: Three further consultations on East Ren towns (following the five in Digest 112, June 2022). While each varies in size, all are relatively affluent and suburban areas south of Glasgow. All three have drop-in events but Giffnock’s took place earlier in the month. Giffnock includes Fenwick Rd, which had ‘soft segregation’ on its cycle lanes for a while before the temporary bollards were removed in spring (Digest 107). As well as the A77, a rail line goes through the town with only a handful of crossing points. The map has over 150 comments.
Featured: Digest 121, Item 1.14.
Website links: Giffnock Commonplace map.
Deadline: 14 November 2022.

1.3: Clarkston Local Action Plan map

Council: East Renfrewshire.
Subject: Clarkston’s consultation comes after its neighbour across the White Cart Water, Busby, had its turn in the summer. The southern edge of Clarkston includes Williamwood High School, off Eaglesham Rd (B767), the subject of a current cycle lane petition. The map has over 260 comments.
Featured: Digest 121, Item 1.15 and previous Clarkston consultation.
Website links: Clarkston Commonplace map.
Deadline: 14 November 2022.

1.4: Eaglesham Local Action Plan map

Council: East Renfrewshire.
Subject: While many of East Ren’s towns bleed into each other, Eaglesham is more rural, between Whitelee Wind Farm and East Kilbride, South Lanarkshire. Also, it’s less connected, without a rail line or cycle paths to nearby towns. The map has over 60 comments.
Featured: Digest 121, Item 1.16.
Website links: Eaglesham Commonplace map.
Deadline: 14 November 2022.

1.5: Lennoxtown Main Street Improvement Project Consultation

Council: East Dunbartonshire.
Subject: Lennoxtown is known as the site of Celtic FC’s training complex. Despite being at the foot of the Campsie Hills, its Main St is not as picturesque as its setting. It has had some regeneration, including Lennoxtown Hub, housing the library and health services. Now a previous improvement project from 2019 is restarting – an initial survey is due to lead to refreshed concept designs for the Main St.
Featured: Digest 121, Item 1.7.
Website links: Lennoxtown project page and survey.
Deadline: 20 November 2022 (EXTENDED).

1.6: Balgray Connections

Council: East Renfrewshire.
Area: Balgray reservoir in Dams to Darnley Country Park, between Barrhead and Newton Mearns in East Renfrewshire.
Subject: Active travel paths added to Aurs Rd in Barrhead and Barrhead Rd in Newton Mearns. In Barrhead, it seems to be a ‘Quietway’-style route on Springfield Dr, parallel to Aurs Rd. It would have raised road tables at junctions and toucan crossings at Aurs Rd and Springfield Rd. At the Newton Mearns end, there would be a shared pavement around the M77 bridge and Westacre Roundabout. However, east of a toucan crossing, there would be proper segregated cycle lanes. These should go the rest of the way to Mearns Cross but there’s doubt about the design around bus stops (possibly due to accessibility concerns?). The Aurs Rd re-alignment project is the bit in the middle, due for construction in 2023–24.
Featured: Digest 122, Item 1.12.
Website links: Balgray Connections Commonplace map.
Deadline: 21 November 2022.

Organisations: East Dunbartonshire Council, Glasgow City Council and Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT).
Area: Most of the length of the A803, Springburn Rd/Kirkintilloch Rd. It runs from the M8 through North Glasgow to Bishopbriggs.
Subject: Phase 1 of a joint City Deal project about how to improve the A803 corridor. In Glasgow, it’s a dual carriageway which is a barrier between neighbourhoods. It has some shared paths around it but none are very wide (despite having space on some of its verges). Towards Bishopbriggs it narrows to one lane each way and is a busy main road surrounded by housing, car showrooms and shops. There’s potential to link to existing protected cycle lanes at Hawthorn St and Fountainwell Rd. Also, to nearby train stations at Springburn and at Bishopbriggs. The A803 project will tie in with Bishopbriggs Town Centre Regeneration. The survey is a chance to get protected cycle lanes into the plans.
Drop-in event – Bishopbriggs War Memorial Hall on Tuesday 15 November, 12–6.30pm. Also, the survey is available in Springburn Library, Bishopbriggs Library and Leisuredrome Leisure Centre.
Website links: A803 Corridor Improvements Project – Survey and A803 Stage 1 Consultation Boards (PDF, 71MB).
Deadline: 22 November 2022.

1.8: Cowcaddens Road & Dobbie’s Loan (Avenues Plus)

Visual of Dobbie’s Loan plans (looking north-west, where lanes end)

Cowcaddens Rd and Dobbie’s Loan both link to N Hanover St and have a joint consultation. The plans for Cowcaddens Rd look promising, especially the radical redesign options for the Port Dundas Rd junction (in featured image at top). The Dobbie’s Loan plans also add two-way protected lanes (especially useful for students at Glasgow Caledonian Uni and its nearby halls). However, the lanes stop short of the trunk road junction, which leads under the M8 to Craighall Rd and Port Dundas. The boards include an updated Avenues phasing map (now with Block D added).

Areas: City-wide.
Subject: TROs – Pitt Street‘s TRO is, confusingly, called Holland St Avenue (apparently the lane was going there before a rethink). Pitt St will link between the protected cycle lanes on Sauchiehall St (Avenue) and Waterloo St (West City Way/Connect2). This TRO only sets restrictions but the council’s plans for Pitt St (PDF) are shown too. Apart from the tricky junction at Waterloo St, the red lanes look more straightforward than the buff-coloured section at the new Moda development (old police station site). However, there is a pretty steep slope going north between Bothwell St and W George Lane. GoBike asked the council about some of these issues earlier in the process. We got a detailed response from the council’s Sustainable Transport team justifying their decisions. While “gradients of adjacent streets… are similar”, Pitt St is a few blocks longer than Holland St so is a tougher climb.
London Rd – a proposed TRO would set the scene for permanent phases of the East City Way past the velodrome (as seen in Digest 113, Item 1.4). It has its own complicated junctions at Dunn St and Springfield Rd (but the latter does convert a filter lane into cycling space). The council wants to build the project before the UCI Cycling World Championships in August 2023. Stopwatches at the ready…
Provanmill Rd and Cumbernauld Rd – two other Spaces for People projects near Hogganfield Park with proposed TROs.
Raeberry St – one-ways and a cycling only restriction proposed for the junction of Mount St/Simpson St (part of Connecting Woodside).
The School Streets order (for 19 primary schools) was made on 24 October 2022, as covered in Digest 105, Item 1.2. On the same date an order was also made for the Cardonald area (see Digest 97, Item 1.2).
Traffic Calming – Linkwood Dr, Drumchapel; Wardie Rd, Easterhouse.
Website links: Glasgow City Proposed TROs, Glasgow City Proposed Traffic Calming Schemes.

The latest drop-in event is about Dams to Darnley Country Park and East Renfrewshire’s Balgray Connections project. Today’s event is in Avenue Shopping Centre, Newton Mearns, 11am–3pm (near Costa). Another follows on 2 November, 3pm to 7pm at Barrhead Foundry centre.

Also, it’s decision day at Inverclyde Council for the Spaces for People route in Greenock. Will they follow Renfrewshire and remove it? Or will it get a stay of execution?

A few consultations come to an end over the Hallowe’en weekend – including for North Ayrshire, North Lanarkshire, East Dunbartonshire and Glasgow.

Council: Inverclyde.
Subject: Spaces for People temporary route between Greenock town centre and a coastal park. A mix of painted lanes on pavement and protected cycletracks on road. A vote by the council in March was 9:2 in favour of keeping the lanes for another six months. A review was due in September with the next environment and regeneration committee meeting on 27 October. The council’s SfP update report has some interesting statistics about cycle usage and traffic flow. People cycling the existing Coastal Path (east of the new lanes) seem to stay on the eastern shared pavement on Container Way; then use Patrick St/Brougham St instead of crossing to Laird St/Dalrymple St. The western side of Container Way has strange chicane barriers and Tesco’s car park entrance, which may have something to do with it (above). The report recommends improvements and making the temporary lanes permanent.
Featured: Digest 108, Item 1.12.
Website links: Greenock Town Centre to Battery Park – Community Engagement and Inverclyde Now article on council vote (March 2022).
Deadline: No obvious deadline.

1.2: Irvine housing developments

Council: North Ayrshire
Subject: Two sites are being redeveloped – part of Ayrshire Central Hospital’s grounds and Montgomerie Park in Irvine, either side of the A78. Both housing plans include accessible homes and walking/cycling links. Montgomerie Park seems to include a cycle path alongside the site, which links to an existing off-road path, but there isn’t much detail.
Featured: Digest 120, Item 1.6.
Website links: Ayrshire Central Hospital consultation and Montgomerie Park consultation.
Deadline: 28 October 2022.

1.3: Ravenscraig Levelling Up Fund bid

Council: North Lanarkshire.
Area: Part of the former Ravenscraig Steelworks site between Motherwell and Wishaw.
Subject: ‘Proposals to develop a large site in Ravenscraig.’ However, it’s a relatively small part of the huge Ravenscraig site. Also, most of the money appears to go on groundworks for utilities. New active travel links would be mainly linking the new estate to existing paths. That would still leave the ‘missing link’ to the west of Robberhall Rd towards Coursington Rd. The bid for the former industrial site would go to the UK Government’s Levelling Up Fund (without any hint of irony!). Comments have to go to the council by email: ravenscraigluf@northlan.gov.uk.
Website links: Ravenscraig Levelling Up Fund bid webpage.
Deadline: 28 October 2022.

1.4: Meadowhead Road (Craigneuk) Active Travel and Road Safety Improvement

Council: North Lanarkshire.
Area: Craigneuk area between Ravenscraig and Wishaw (near Shieldmuir train station).
Subject: ‘Take 2’ for this street after a previous attempt at active travel improvements hit the skids. The Meadowhead Rd plans from 2020 included rain gardens, speed chicanes and changes to car parking. Some residents took issue with the latter – the project was delayed and then lost funding. The new plans widen the north footway to a 3m shared path. The road is a bus route, which had ruled out speed bumps, but the new plans add half a dozen speed tables. A path already goes east from the Wishawhill Wood Pump Track to Wishaw’s Main St. Meadowhead Rd could connect between it and the recent Ravenscraig Active Travel Link path, going north to the new playpark by the Regional Sports Centre.
Featured: Digest 80, Item 1.2.
Website links: Meadowhead Rd consultation webpage and Meadowhead Rd ‘storymap’.
Deadline: 30 October 2022.

Council: Glasgow City.
Area: South of the river from Kinning Park round to Oatlands and down to Shawlands (excluding Pollokshields).
Subject: Toryglen is also included in the ‘South Central’ area for this Local Development Framework. Apparently, it’s less urgent than a Strategic Development Framework (SDF). The neighbourhoods involved vary from less well off Govanhill to affluent Strathbungo. Also, the map of the area shows how it overlaps with the Riverside SDF between the Barclays site and the Squinty Bridge.
Featured: Digest 118, Item 1.12.
Website links: Transforming Communities Glasgow webpage.
Deadline: 31 October 2022.

1.6: Lennoxtown Main Street Improvement Project Consultation

Council: East Dunbartonshire.
Subject: Lennoxtown is known as the site of Celtic FC’s training complex. Despite being at the foot of the Campsie Hills, its Main St is not as picturesque as its setting. It has had some regeneration, including Lennoxtown Hub, housing the library and health services. Now a previous improvement project from 2019 is restarting – an initial survey is due to lead to refreshed concept designs for the Main St.
Featured: Digest 121, Item 1.7.
Website links: Lennoxtown project page and survey.
Deadline: 31 October 2022.

1.7: Loans to Troon active travel path – Phase 3

Organisation: Ayrshire Roads Alliance (ARA).
Subject: Another second attempt at a consultation. This path and 2-way cycletrack built in Troon as a Places for Everyone project is to be extended to the village of Loans, South Ayrshire. ARA say: “Phase 3 will complement the completed Phase 1, from Troon Train Station to Dundonald Road via Harling Drive, and Phase 2, through Marr College playing fields to Muirhead Primary School.” This consultation has two options about which way to take the Buchan Rd path. Both are residential streets with on-street car parking – Lochlea Ave or North Dr (which leads to an existing path to Loans). A previous consultation had detailed plans for one-way streets but that isn’t mentioned this time.

1.9: Giffnock Local Action Plan map

Council: East Renfrewshire.
Subject: Clarkston’s consultation comes after its neighbour across the White Cart Water, Busby, had its turn in the summer.
Drop-in events – The Avenue Shopping Centre, Newton Mearns: Thurs 27 October, 11am–3pm.
Council: North Lanarkshire.
Area: A8, next to the M8, between Coatbridge, Bellshill and EuroCentral Business Park.
Subject: Apparently, NLC’s surveys for a ‘park and ride’ train station at a motorway business park didn’t show enough demand. Instead, they’ve changed their City Deal project to a roundabout on a dual carriageway (with a few active travel routes)! The new junction on the A8 would link to to an expanded railhead for freight (currently accessed from Reema Rd, Mossend) and to the former Shanks & McEwan site at Carnbroe/Orchard Farm. The active travel routes would apparently link EuroCentral west to Mossend and east to Newhouse but there are no designs.
Putting it all together.

August opens with Cycle to Work Day and plenty of Traffic Orders from Glasgow, East Ayrshire and East Dunbartonshire. There’s analysis of the event for the eastern side of Argyle St, with accessibility issues raised again. Also, a major city centre plan being pushed by GCC (with several emails to GoBike). It has a few surprises which could help connect the city centre. (Tonight’s Digest was delayed by connection and commuting issues –apologies.)

Forthcoming consultations

The second stage of consultation about the Raeberry Street Quietway is due to open tomorrow (5 August). This follows the first phase consultation from late 2021 and is part of the wider Connecting Woodside project. Also starting soon (about a year after the Traffic Order) is the North Kelvin/North Woodside Restricted Parking Zone.

1: Current Consultations
(in date order for responses)

1.1: Paisley Town Centre – Causeyside Street Regeneration

Council: Renfrewshire.
Area: Causeyside St and St Mirren St between Paisley Canal and Gilmour St train stations.
Subject: A potentially very useful link on a main road. A segregated cycletrack is proposed between the pedestrianised part of Gilmour St down Causeyside St to just past Stow Brae (where there’s a link to NCN75 at Telford’s). Renfrewshire Council removed some Spaces for People projects and have very little protected, on-road infrastructure. So, even though the proposed cycletrack would be 2-way, it’s a big step forward for the area. Talk of keeping/adding car parking spaces may jar but it’s one less stick for critics to beat it with. There will still be many hurdles to clear, including accessibility and reaction from shoppers/shopkeepers. The plans are by Amey, better known for their trunk road work. That may explain the lack of trees and the convoluted junction south of Stow Brae.
Website links: Causeyside St ‘storymap’ (with survey at end).
Deadline: 7 August 2022.

1.2: Ayr to Prestwick Active Travel Route

Organisation: Ayrshire Roads Alliance (on behalf of South Ayrshire Council).
Subject: An upgraded “active travel route linking Ayr Esplanade to Prestwick Town Train Station will be proposed. It is envisaged that the proposed route will also connect to existing core paths in addition to future aspirational schemes such as Accessible Ayr, The Culzean Way and the Prestwick to Barassie Active Travel Route.” If it goes ahead, it would replace part of the current NCN7 along the coast, so has potential for cycle tourism as well as local journeys. There are photos of issues along the current route but no plans/visuals. So, it seems to be an early consultation to get comments (and maybe gauge demand?). If so, the more responses the better.
Website links: Ayr to Prestwick survey.
Deadline: 12 August 2022.

1.3: Connecting Battlefield

Council: Glasgow City.
Area: Battlefield Road, Grange Road, Langside Road and Queens Drive (between Queen’s Park and Mount Florida).
Subject: Relaunch of the former Battlefield Street Design project after a few years on hold during the pandemic. It features a uni-directional extension to the South City Way cycletrack running alongside Queen’s Park and down Battlefield Road. Also, there would be major changes to junctions at Queen’s Drive, Langside Rd and Battlefield Rest (removing a road between it and the old Victoria Hospital site). The consultation site mentions the Liveable Neighbourhood plans for Langside to Toryglen so hopefully these will dovetail with the Battlefield plans.
Featured: Consultation Extra, February 2020.
Website links: Connecting Battlefield ‘Storymap’ and Connecting Battlefield survey.
Deadline: 14 August 2022.

The site, east of the Morrisons supermarket, had lain empty for decades. Wheatley Group is building new flats, called ‘Calton Village’ (for “mid-market rent”) and amending the road layout. Armour St will be filtered at its western end so traffic for Morrisons has to use Barrack St. Various parking bays and build-outs are planned (plus secure bike parking). However, Melbourne St is used as a rat run (to avoid traffic lights) so may be better with a diagonal filter to stop through traffic.
Website links: Barras North/Calton Village TRO documents (combined PDF) and housing development planning application.
Deadline: 25 August 2022.

Further east, there would be one-way cycletracks on either side of the road. There was quite a lot of support for the cycle lanes but many points in the meeting came from blind people objecting to bus stop bypasses and raised road tables.
Website links: Argyle St East Avenue webinar note.

Council: Inverclyde.
Area: Part of upper Port Glasgow, west of Kilmacolm Rd/A761. Includes Bardrainney, Mid-Auchinleck and Slaemuir neighbourhoods.
Subject: As well as a 20mph zone this plan links into changes to NCN75. “The proposal is being supported by Sustrans Scotland as part of a proposal to reroute the National Cycle Route 75 along Auchenbothie Road.” Auchenbothie Road has a pink dashed line on the map, showing where traffic calming is planned. NCN75 already connects to it (red dotted line on map) but currently goes along Montrose Ave and Dubbs Rd (blue dotted line).
Website links: Port Glasgow 20mph zone survey.
Deadline: 29 July 2022.

1.2: Paisley Town Centre – Causeyside Street Regeneration

Split screen view of Causeyside St – current photo on left; proposed visual on right

So, even though the proposed cycletrack would be 2-way, it’s still a big step forward for the area.

1.3: Ayr to Prestwick Active Travel Route

Aerial photo with project areas marked

After a flurry of consultations since the local elections, things have slowed down for summer holidays. However, there’s an important Order to pave the way for protected bike lanes on Byres Road (hopefully sooner rather than later).

Elsewhere, the City Wharf pre-application closes soon. Consultations on East City Way and East Ren’s guidance are open for a bit longer. Greater Pollok still has months to go, which is handy since the map only has a dozen responses so far. Also, Greenock’s Spaces for People consultation is still open. Added: consultations for Ayr/Prestwick and Battlefield, Glasgow.

1.1: City Wharf development (Anderston Quay)

Organisation: Dandara Living (developers).
Area: Anderston Quay by the Clyde, west of the Kingston Bridge. Site is next to the shared path to pedestrian bridge over the Expressway.
Subject: Latest plan for flats and public realm on this site, which seems to build over the top of Cheapside St (see image at top of Digest 113). Planning permission was given in 2018 but Dandara have updated their plans with a taller tower (at the south-eastern corner). This helps increase the number of flats to 670 in three blocks. Apparently, they’ll have 60 car parking spaces but 850+ bike spaces! There’s no detail on the type of bike parking or about the “commercial space”. City Wharf is a pre-application consultation. A ‘live chat’ took place online on 16 June as part of the process.
Featured: Digest 113, Item 1.3.
Website links: City Wharf design proposals (click buttons under image to view each one).
Deadline: 8 July 2022.

1.2: East City Way – Phase 6 and 7

Council: Glasgow City.
Area: London Road – from Fielden Street (West of Scotland Housing Association) to Canmore Street (by Helensea Park).
Subject: East City Way Phase 1 (2021) is at Mount Vernon, near the North Lanarkshire boundary. Phases 6 and 7 are due ahead of the UCI Cycling World Championships in August 2023. They’d continue where the older bi-directional cycletrack from Bridgeton finishes (near the police station). They’d be uni-directional lanes past Celtic Park/Emirates towards Braidfauld, following the current Spaces for People lanes. However, they’d take up less room (leaving space for both right-turn lanes and bike lanes at junctions). They’d give permanent protection, including on the section past Celtic Park where segregation was removed. The Clyde Gateway protected junction looks promising but the angled crossroads at Springfield Rd has several issues. Also, why narrow north-side pavements instead of using the derelict space on the south-side?
Last featured: Digest 113, Item 1.4.
Website links: East City Way Facebook post and East City Way survey (13 questions).
Deadline: 15 July 2022.

1.3: LDP2 – Supplementary Guidance Consultation (ERC)

Council: East Renfrewshire.
Subject: ERC is reviewing Supplementary Guidance documents to go with its Local Development Plan 2. They say: “Supplementary Guidance provides further detail about the policies and proposals of the LDP2 and forms a statutory part of the Adopted plan. There are 3 statutory Supplementary Guidance documents on which we are consulting, these are: Affordable Housing; Green Network; and Development Contributions.” This last item can include housebuilders creating paths to join existing networks. There’s also a Householder Design Guide coming out separately to LDP2.
First featured: Digest 47, Item 1.5 (further detail in Digest 48, Item 1.4).
Website links: Supplementary Guidance Consultation (near foot of page).
Deadline: 20 July 2022.

1.4: Greater Pollok Strategic Development Framework

Council: Glasgow City.
Area: South-western corner of Glasgow at edge of M77 and East Renfrewshire. Includes Leverndale, Nitshill, Priesthill and Darnley neighbourhoods.
Subject: The latest SDF follows others for North Glasgow, Inner East, etc. and looks at the economy, environment and transport over the next few decades. This part of Glasgow juts out between Barrhead and Thornliebank so connections with East Renfrewshire are important. It covers part of Dams to Darnley Country Park so has some things in common with the recent Barrhead consultation map. Also, Braidcraft Rd and Brockburn Rd have Spaces for People lanes (as does Corkerhill Rd to north). However, there are some hellish junctions around Silverburn Shopping Centre. Later in the year GCC should write a draft strategy for further consultation.
First featured: Digest 113, Item 1.6.
Website links: Greater Pollok Commonplace map.
Deadline: September 2022.

1.5: Greenock to Battery Park SfP lane

Council: Inverclyde.
Subject: A Spaces for People temporary route between Greenock town centre and a coastal park. A council vote was 9:2 in favour of keeping the lanes for another six months, with a further review in September. Photos in the consultation survey show a mixture of on-road ‘soft’ segregation and painted lanes on footways and across side roads. While some of the junction and bus stop treatments may not be ideal, there seem to be decent protected sections too.
First featured: Digest 108, Item 1.12.
Website links: Greenock Town Centre to Battery Park – Community Engagement and Inverclyde Now article on council vote.
Deadline: No obvious deadline.

1.6: Ayr to Prestwick Active Travel Route

Organisation: Ayrshire Roads Alliance (via consultants Sweco).
Area: South Ayrshire.
Subject: An upgraded active travel route between Ayr and Prestwick. If it goes ahead, it would replace the current NCN7 along the coast, so has potential for cycle tourism as well as local journeys. There are photos of parts of the current route but no plans/visuals. So, it seems to be an early consultation to get comments (and maybe gauge demand?). If so, the more responses the better.
Website links: Ayr to Prestwick survey.
Deadline: 12 August 2022.

Council: Glasgow City.
Area: Battlefield Road, Grange Road, Langside Road and Queens Drive (between Queen’s Park and Mount Florida).
Subject: A long awaited ‘relaunch’ of the project, which was interrupted by Covid-19. It features an extension to the South City Way cycletrack and major changes to junctions like Battlefield Rest and Mount Florida Corner.

The drawing shows the layout of protected cycle lanes on Byres Rd. While it’s good to see them included, it’s another example of issues with junctions – priority at side streets and being spat out into crossroads. Also, there are sweeping curves for many side streets but sharp angles for the bike lanes; when it should be the other way around.
Website links: Byres Rd TRO plans (PDF).

Ominously, active travel isn’t mentioned at all in this consultation. While bus routes and issues need attention, it does raise questions about the wider approach when GBP hold the purse strings. The ATS was written under Anna Richardson who’s since left the council – no replacement Active Travel Lead has been appointed so far.
They’d give permanent protection, including on the section past Celtic Park where segregation was removed (due to a perceived trip hazard). The lane seems to be kerb-separated, so hopefully doesn’t suffer the same fate. The Clyde Gateway protected junction looks promising but the angled crossroads at Springfield Rd (in link and image, above) has several issues.
Council: Glasgow City.
Area: South-western corner of Glasgow at edge of M77 and East Renfrewshire. Includes Leverndale, Nitshill, Priesthill and Darnley neighbourhoods.
Subject: The latest SDF follows others for North Glasgow, Inner East, etc. These documents cover larger areas and look at requirements for economy, environment and transport over the next few decades. This is an initial consultation to gather comments on a Commonplace map. This part of Glasgow juts out between Barrhead and Thornliebank so connections with East Renfrewshire are important. It covers part of Dams to Darnley Country Park so has some things in common with the Barrhead consultation map in last issue. Also, Braidcraft Rd and Brockburn Rd have Spaces for People lanes (as does Corkerhill Rd to north). However, there are some hellish junctions around Silverburn Shopping Centre. Later in the year GCC should write a draft strategy for further consultation.
Website links: Greater Pollok Commonplace map.
Deadline: September 2022.

Visualisation of cap covering the M8 at Charing Cross (short of the Mitchell Library!)

Council: Glasgow City.
Area: City-wide (but only one bid per UK parliament constituency).
Subject: This is a UK Government fund for ‘smaller’ transport projects, town centre regeneration and heritage projects up to £20m. Pollok Country Park Stables & Courtyard won funding from the first call. Also, one big bid is allowed for a £50m transport project. In the second call, Glasgow’s big transport bid is a cap over the M8 at Charing Cross. However, it wouldn’t extend in front of the Mitchell Library. Apparently, there are complications with clearance above the road and shallow rail tunnels. Also, GCC would need approval from Transport Scotland. The other high profile bid is to restore the Winter Gardens at the People’s Palace. Both are in the same UK constituency (Glasgow Central). The rest include regenerating ‘town centres’ in Drumchapel (Glasgow NW), Easterhouse (Glasgow East) and Maryhill (Glasgow North). Also, paying for Possilpark Liveable Neighbourhood (Glasgow NE) and ‘Clyde Connectivity’ linking QEUH, SEC and city centre (Glasgow West/Central).
Website links: Re:Glasgow Levelling Up Fund article and GCC City Administration Committee paper.

This Digest is dominated by consultations for East Renfrewshire. (The last issue should have included some of them too – apologies.) Five area consultations use Commonplace maps, similar to Glasgow’s Liveable Neighbourhoods (one of which is still open). Other East Ren projects are for a section of Ayr Rd (A77) and supporting documents for the council’s Local Development Plan 2 (LDP2). It’s almost as if ERC have some new active travel staff…

Elsewhere, Inverclyde still have a survey open on a Spaces for People route. Also, a consultation is due to open in June about a gap site by the Clyde…

Talking about bike parking, they said: “This is included in our current development phase in the yard and should be completed by the end of the year.” There are several planning applications for their site but they may mean one from May 2019 (which has since been updated – 19/01438/FUL). It includes adding bike parking spaces near the main gate on Eastvale Place and on an access road off Sandyford St (behind Glasgow Uni’s Maclay Residencies on Cooperage Place).
First featured: Digest 111, Item 1.2.
Website links: SWG3’s tweet and May 2019 planning application.
