<p>As destruction dominates the news abroad and in parts of the UK, there&#8217;s little solace to be found. However, this issue has a few consultations with plans for new construction following demolitions in North Glasgow and North Ayrshire. Also, renewal for a town centre in South Lanarkshire. In Glasgow, there are plans for city centre junctions and a ‘conversation’ event in the Southside. Elsewhere, there&#8217;s a one-way system proposed in Renfrewshire.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Community Conversation on Travel in Govanhill, Glasgow</h4>



<p>A community event for <em>“anyone who lives in Govanhill who has any experience or views about travel. This can be any mode e.g. car, public transport, walking, cycling, wheeling.”</em> It will look into current experiences, barriers and future solutions for sustainable travel. <h4 class="wp-block-heading" id="one-one">1.1: Connecting Woodside – Phase 2 (St George’s Road)</h4>



<p><strong>Council:&nbsp;</strong>Glasgow City.<br><strong>Subject:</strong>&nbsp;Updated plans for St George’s Road, between Charing Cross and N Woodside Rd. The 2-way protected cycleway will connect from the existing Avenue on Sauchiehall St and eventually link into existing infra next to Garscube Rd. There are some changes to junctions and new crossings along the route. The plans include the more direct crossing option at Phoenix Rd/Maryhill Rd. Also, there’s a rare sighting of a continuous pavement; at a side access road (with barrier) next to Woodside Library. Nearby is a novel cycle crossing going diagonally across a pedestrian crossing (with bike light phase apparently). Two side roads were already going to be restricted: Clarendon Place will be stopped up (opened at other end) and Glenfarg St will be filtered. <p><strong>Council:&nbsp;</strong>North Ayrshire.<br><strong>Subject:</strong>&nbsp;Final plans for this housing development on the site of former residencies at Ayrshire Central Hospital in Irvine. Updated maps include details of walking and cycling routes (the latter marked in pink on page 5). Both are existing off-road paths –&nbsp;while the north-eastern one is retained, the western one makes way for bungalows and is pushed onto the footway. These include the homes next to the existing gatehouses, which are a better match for the listed buildings than you see on many developments. <p><strong>Council:&nbsp;</strong>Renfrewshire.<br><strong>Area: </strong>Gallowhill, Paisley (not to be confused with Garrowhill in the East End of Glasgow).<br><strong>Subject:</strong>&nbsp;Proposed one-way system for a neighbourhood in north-east Paisley. The clockwise loop goes on Montgomery Road/Netherhill Cottages around Gallowhill Primary School. Apparently, it&#8217;s to help with bus links (McGills reinstating their 64 route). Presumably, this is due to reduced carriageway width from on-street car parking. Renfrewshire Council also mention road safety benefits and there may be some for cycling. The filtered paths at the northern end of Netherhill Rd help permeability for people cycling, so they&#8217;re not disadvantaged. <p><strong>Council: </strong>Glasgow City.<br><strong>Subject:</strong> Updated plans for protected cycle lanes using width on Wallacewell Rd, Northgate Rd, Broomfield Rd, Balornock Rd and Red Road. Wallacewell Rd keeps its 1-way ‘soft segregated’ lanes with more on Northgate Rd; 2-way lanes for Broomfield Rd and Red Rd; Balornock Rd gets both (by Springburn Park). Kerbs go in at junctions and some interesting crossings (including to a school). The current roundabout at Northgate Rd becomes a ‘cyclops’-style junction with traffic lights (like those on South City Way/A77 Ayr Rd). This mix of ‘soft segregated’ lanes and kerbed junctions/crossings could be a model for the <a href="https://www.glasgow.gov.uk/activetravel" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">City Network</a>. However, the black &amp; white ‘armadillos’/‘zebras’ need to be continuous to avoid issues with car parking. Construction is expected to start in early 2024. Next steps include links with a proposed <a href="https://www.glasgow.gov.uk/CHttpHandler.ashx?id=59744&amp;p=0" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Eastern Springburn active travel route</a> south of Petershill Dr (near the former Red Road flats) and Royston Rd cycle lanes.<br><strong>Featured:</strong> <a href="https://www.gobike.org/consultation-digest-issue-15-21-august-2018-activity-in-glasgow-east-dunbartonshire-scotland-and-the-uk-5993" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Digest 15, 1.1</a>.<br><strong>Website links: </strong><a href="https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/757e7b96272341b2b0161139d35a7636" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NEATR Storymap</a>.<br><strong>Deadline: </strong>No obvious deadline (previous consultation took place in 2018 so this new process may just be for info).</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading" id="one-five">1.5: East Kilbride town centre: A new vision</h4>



<p><strong>Council:&nbsp;</strong>South Lanarkshire.<br><strong>Subject:</strong>&nbsp;A familiar story of changing (online) shopping habits, empty units and redevelopment. Surprisingly, the most recent building, Centre West, is due to be demolished for housing, with a new north-south street put next to it. Other demolitions would create space for a new town square and car parking by the Queensway trunk road. However, there doesn’t seem to be any new crossing to the square or the path along the south of the site. The existing underpasses often have issues with broken glass and poor sight-lines/personal safety. This is why SLC are building segregated on-road cycle lanes on Churchill Avenue (not in the plans). Will the path be upgraded with improved links west near Blacklands Rd or across to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Churchill-Ave-cycleway-EK_2280_1200px.jpeg" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Churchill Ave’s 2-way protected lanes</a>? Also, could there be a further north-south link between Brouster Gate and the new square? <h4 class="wp-block-heading" id="one-six">1.6: Waiting to Happen (junctions consultation)</h4>



<p><strong>Company:&nbsp;</strong><a href="https://new-practice.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New Practice</a>&nbsp;(architecture practice).<br><strong>Subject:</strong>&nbsp;Community engagement by the practice where Emma Burke Newman worked. She was killed by an HGV driver while cycling at the George V bridge/Broomielaw junction, near the casino, in February 2023. This consultation is about that junction and two others –&nbsp;Gorbals St at the Clutha Vaults pub and Albert Bridge/Clyde St (by the High Court). NP say:&nbsp;<em>“These junctions are our focus of study as they feel like incidents-waiting-to-happen, and one is the site of Emma’s death.”</em>&nbsp;Diagrams show movements around each junction (and include the council’s plans for the South City Way extension at the Clutha).&nbsp;<a href="https://www.gobike.org/consultation-digest-local-issue-116-04-august-2022-18038#one-nine" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New Practice carried out previous consultations like George Square</a>&nbsp;and have applied their knowledge to make a user friendly page.&nbsp;<em>“We want to hear your experiences when walking, wheeling, scooting, or as a driver to help inform solutions specific to these locations and create systems for a safer city for us all.”</em><br><strong>Featured:</strong>&nbsp;<a href="https://www.gobike.org/consultation-digest-local-issue-141-10-august-2023-20066#one-seven" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Digest 141, 1.7</a>.<br><strong>Website links:</strong>&nbsp;<a href="https://new-practice.co.uk/waiting-to-happen" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Waiting to Happen consultation page</a>.<br><strong>Deadline:&nbsp;</strong>No obvious deadline (but New Practice say they’ll review the submissions and present to councillors).</p>

<p><strong>Subject:</strong> New pedestrian-cycle bridge under construction between Water Row, Govan and Pointhouse Quay, Yorkhill (with active travel links via the underpass at Ferry Rd towards Partick). As mentioned elsewhere on GoBike&#8217;s website, the main part of the bridge span has arrived (from the Netherlands). The good news is plans already include walking and cycling paths. The existing Wester Way off-road path, parallel to Westerhill Rd, currently stops near the former Aviva offices. <p><strong>Council: </strong>South Lanarkshire.<br><strong>Area: </strong>Clydesdale/Clyde Valley split into three (quite arbitrary) regions: North-west (Lesmahagow/Douglas), North-east (Carstairs/Biggar) and South (Abington/Leadhills). They miss out Carluke and Lanark, as these <a href="https://www.southlanarkshire.gov.uk/downloads/download/982/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">towns already have Active Travel studies</a>.<br><strong>Subject:</strong>&nbsp;Consultation on draft Active Travel Studies for each of the three areas (by Aecom). The M74/NCN74 corridor runs through the north-east and south areas but not all villages have paths to it. Recent active travel projects by the council in Clydesdale include Carstairs and Leadhills. Also, Leadhills is part of a joint active travel project to connect it to Wanlockhead, Dumfries &amp; Galloway. <p><strong>Council: </strong>Glasgow City.<br><strong>Area:</strong> Phase 1 &#8211; Yorkhill North; Phase 2 &#8211; Yorkhill South; Phase 3 &#8211; Kelvingrove; Phase 4 &#8211; Corunna St &amp; Minerva St.<br><strong>Subject:</strong>&nbsp;Formerly ‘Yorkhill and Kelvingrove Cycling Village’ – still funded by Spaces for Everyone. Phase 1 proposals show a bi-directional cycletrack from Kelvin Way on Radnor St, Haugh Rd, Gilbert St and Sandyford St. The Gilbert/Sandyford corner links to a path to Centurion Way, the 2-way lanes on Ferry Rd (separate City Deal project) and the Expressway underpass to NCN7. Yorkhill St links south to Kelvinhaugh St and north to Old Dumbarton Rd (also City Deal). There are public realm improvements, new crossings and a new cycle hire station on Kelvinhaugh St. Most of this looks promising although it&#8217;s a 2-way cycletrack so could be tricky to join or leave (especially at diagonal crossing from Radnor St to Haugh Rd). It passes opposite Bike for Good and Dockyard Social (maybe partly to avoid <a href="https://goo.gl/maps/Z2oYh1CYdv8N42Uo9" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">loading vans</a>). <p><strong>Council: </strong>Renfrewshire.<br><strong>Area:</strong> Old Greenock Rd/A726 junction south of Erskine.<br><strong>Subject:</strong>&nbsp;Revisiting one of the junctions from the Erskine junction safety consultation. Results were in favour of action to improve road safety. Southholm Roundabout is set amongst trees on the edge of town but hemmed in on the south-west by a low stone wall. There may be enough space for a proper&nbsp;<a href="https://bicycledutch.wordpress.com/2015/10/13/explaining-the-dutch-roundabout-abroad/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dutch-style roundabout</a> (as speed limit is changing to 30mph). These tend to be single-lane with a cycle lane in a separate outer ring (crossings on each arm leave a gap for cars to stop). However, neither of the two options offers that. One proposal is for a single lane roundabout but it expands the centre instead of pulling the kerblines in. Both options have shared pavements too. Meanwhile, neighbouring <a href="https://www.eastrenfrewshire.gov.uk/article/5762/Work-on-key-active-travel-project-gets-underway-in-Newton-Mearns" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">East Renfrewshire&#8217;s Dutch-style roundabout at Malletsheugh on A77 is under construction</a>. Now part of Connecting Woodside, it’s back for further consultation. It’s about the stopped up end of North Woodside Rd at Great Western Rd outside the theatre (formerly Lansdowne Church). Active travel is mentioned, as well as a performance space, but there don’t seem to be any formal plans yet. <p><strong>Council: </strong>South Lanarkshire.<br><strong>Area:</strong> West Mains Road at its eastern end, from Creighton Grove to the Priestknowe (Three Bears) roundabout. <br><strong>Subject:</strong>&nbsp;Section of W Mains Rd past housing to link to bike paths on Churchill Ave. There are two options to continue east of the existing 1-way cycletracks (from zebra crossing). Option 1 has a short 2-way cycletrack then shared path, with green space made into a ‘pocket park’ (keeping most parking bays). Option 2 is mostly 2-way cycletrack, except for short breaks at disabled parking bays, then shared path round corner at roundabout. The latter would remove most of the current car parking spaces and convert the grass area into a residents car park. While the council have to keep residents on-side, it&#8217;s a bit of a Hobson&#8217;s choice between the two options. <p><strong>Council:&nbsp;</strong>North Ayrshire.<br><strong>Subject:</strong>&nbsp;First consultation stage for the next Local Development Plan by North Ayrshire. It may be one of the first in Scotland under the new National Planning Framework 4 (NPF4 came into force in February 2023). As a result, it should have more emphasis on the environment, including active travel. Getting cycling routes/networks, developer obligations, etc. mentioned in the LDP makes them more likely to be delivered. <h4 class="wp-block-heading" id="one-nine">1.9: North Lanarkshire Council – Green and open space survey</h4>



<p><strong>Council:&nbsp;</strong>North Lanarkshire.<br><strong>Subject:</strong>&nbsp;Survey and audit data to feed into an Open Space Strategy and other policies.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.gobike.org/consultation-digest-local-issue-103-6-january-2022-16452#two-two" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NLC avoid on-street protected cycle lanes</a>, so anything affecting off-street paths could have a big impact on cycling in the county. Areas like the Seven Lochs Wetland Park have cross-border active travel routes (Hogganfield Loch to Drumpellier Country Park, Coatbridge). NL’s other country parks, Palacerigg (see above) and especially Strathclyde Park, are also havens for active travel. The latter has&nbsp;<a href="https://www.gobike.org/consultation-digest-local-issue-92-3-august-2021-14734#one-nine" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">added and upgraded paths near Bellshill</a>&nbsp;with more of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.gobike.org/consultation-digest-local-issue-128-02-february-2023-19161#one-five" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NCN74 due to be re-routed through the park</a>. The council ignored a GoBike suggestion for links between Strathclyde Park, Duchess Park, Ravenscraig and the existing Greenlink route (as part of redevelopment of Airbles Rd). There’s potential for similar links around some of North Lanarkshire’s dozen nature reserves. <p><strong>Organisation:&nbsp;</strong>Loch Lomond &amp; the Trossachs National Park.<br><strong>Area:&nbsp;</strong>The park ranges from Loch Eck and Loch Goil in the west to Loch Earn and Callander in the east. Also, from Killin and Crianlarich in the north to Balloch in the south (but it misses out Helensburgh and Gare Loch).<br><strong>Subject:</strong>&nbsp;A wide-ranging five year plan for the park. It includes a section on ‘Low Carbon Travel for Everyone’. Cycle routes and active travel are mentioned briefly but most of the section is about buses. That may make sense, considering the size of the park, but it&#8217;s still a bit disappointing. There&#8217;s already a cycle route from Balloch up the west side of Loch Lomond (and there were <a href="https://www.gobike.org/consultation-digest-local-issue-97-15669#one-eleven" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">plans for an active travel route to Inverarnan as part of A82 works</a>). <a href="https://www.lochgoil-trust.org/projects/the-river-walk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Active travel paths were extended along the River Goil in 2021</a> and there seems to be plenty of scope for more.<br><strong>Website links:</strong> <a href="https://lomondtrossachsfuture.commonplace.is/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Loch Lomond &amp; the Trossachs National Park Commonplace site</a>.<br><strong>Deadline: 19 July 2023.</strong></p>

The main headline is the phasing and distances planned. <br>Phase 0 – existing projects: East City Way, Connecting Battlefield, Connecting Woodside, Connecting Yorkhill &amp; Kelvingrove, City Deal: Byres Rd/Sighthill and Flourishing Molendinar. <br>Phase 1 – City Network Advanced Delivery Areas in the North (24km), South (33km) and Greater Govan (20km). There are no specific timescales except that the network will be done in ten years (or 2030 in some docs).<br><em>“GCC are committed to delivering the City Network in partnership with other sustainable transport modes, recognising that there will be occasions where conflicts arise and decisions have to be made with regards specific priorities on key links.”&nbsp;</em>Perhaps including places like Paisley Road West? <h4 class="wp-block-heading" id="two-two">2.2:&nbsp;Causeyside Street Regeneration – dropped</h4>



<p><strong>Subject: </strong>Plans for a 2-way cycletrack on Causeyside St, Paisley have been dropped by Renfrewshire Council. Businesses in the town centre had reacted negatively to the redevelopment, despite the fact it would&#8217;ve kept current car parking spaces. Councillor Kenny MacLaren, said he hadn’t heard “one person speak positively about it”. This Digest has been positive about the lanes linking between Gilmour St station and NCN7 at Canal St. It&#8217;s unfortunate this happened while GoBike has been restructuring. We&#8217;d ask any members in Renfrewshire who are disappointed by this decision to get involved in our new structure and at our AGM when it&#8217;s announced. There&#8217;s a short cycle route but it seems it&#8217;s only within the estate for some reason. There&#8217;s nothing about a crucial link to nearby Cumbernauld train station or Palacerigg Country Park. It may be one of the first in Scotland under the new National Planning Framework 4 (which came into force in February 2023). As a result, it should have more emphasis on the environment including active travel. Getting cycling routes/networks, developer obligations, etc. mentioned in the LDP makes them more likely to be delivered. <p><strong>Organisation:&nbsp;</strong><a href="https://glasgowurbansports.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Glasgow Urban Sports</a>&nbsp;(GUS).<br><strong>Area:&nbsp;</strong>Southside between Eglinton St and Pollokshaws Rd.<br><strong>Subject:</strong>&nbsp;Formerly GUS M74, now revised and renamed…&nbsp;<em>“The Devon Street Urban Park project is a proposal from Glasgow Urban Sports (GUS), a community led organisation, that aims to transform an unused area of land under the canopy of the M74 motorway, on the southside of Glasgow, to create a new public urban park and community leisure space.”&nbsp;</em>While the project still involves building a skatepark it seems to have broadened out a bit to gain more community support. <p><strong>Council:&nbsp;</strong>Renfrewshire.<br><strong>Subject:</strong>&nbsp;Plans for a protected 2-way cycletrack on Causeyside St linking between the pedestrianised area near Paisley Gilmour St station and NCN7 on Canal St. It would improve safety and may increase visitors to the area. However, some local businesses have voiced criticism –&nbsp;Phelps Butchers have this confusing quote: <em>“We need an inclusive town that works for everybody, not one that’s been specifically designed for a minority”</em>(!?). Businesses can&#8217;t complain about loss of car parking (the scheme would increase it) so they focus on disruption and only catering to cyclists. Despite the plans including more pavement space and buses stopping in the carriageway (which speeds up bus journeys). A petition by Paisley First has over 1,500 signatures. However, Paisley Community Trust promoted the petition on Facebook and got a mixture of comments for and against. Like previous studies in South Lanarkshire’s towns, there’s a consultation map to comment on. Some areas have new active travel infrastructure, including Carstairs, with other routes like Leadhills–Wanlockhead to follow. This is a chance to look at gaps like Make Your Way’s&nbsp;<a href="https://www.gobike.org/consultation-digest-local-issue-102-23-december-2021-16327#two-six" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NCN74–Douglas path, which missed out on funding</a>. <p><strong>Council:&nbsp;</strong>Glasgow City.<br><strong>Areas: </strong>Pollokshields East, Govanhill, Tradeston and ‘Greater Gorbals’.<br><strong>Subject:&nbsp;</strong>A consultation on neighbourhoods that aren&#8217;t obvious bedfellows. A different grouping was used for the <a href="https://www.gobike.org/consultation-digest-local-issue-118-1-september-2022-18246#one-twelve" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">South Central Local Development Framework</a> (SCLDF) last year. The southern bit missing is Polmadie, which was tacked onto the Langside to Toryglen LN. Govanhill is one of the most densely populated areas in the city. It contains most of Victoria Rd, with the South City Way, and part of Pollokshaws Rd. The Gorbals (and Hutchesontown) has been almost entirely demolished and rebuilt since the 1950s with mixed results. More recent regeneration has included the rebuilt footbridge to new flats in Oatlands and Richmond Park. Also, the Barclays campus in Tradeston with bike links to the South West City Way and along the former Clyde Place. <p><strong>Council:&nbsp;</strong>Glasgow City.<br><strong>Areas: </strong>Mansewood, Pollokshaws, Shawlands.<br><strong>Subject:&nbsp;</strong>Southside areas east of Pollok Country Park. There&#8217;s the brand new South West City Way extension on St Andrew&#8217;s Drive. At the other end of the scale, the Auldhouse (Tollbooth) Roundabout is a road safety blackspot on one of many wide main roads off the M77 motorway. A lot of the main roads lack crossings, even at some entrances to the park like Pollok Ave. Some big developments are planned for both <a href="https://www.gobike.org/consultation-digest-local-issue-109-31-march-2022-17074#two-four" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Shawbridge Arcade</a> and <a href="https://www.gobike.org/consultation-digest-local-issue-111-26-may-2022-17432" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Shawlands Arcade</a>. Also, the former car showroom <a href="https://www.reglasgow.com/go-ahead-recommended-for-southside-flats-block/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">site on Pollokshaws Rd at Nithsdale Dr just got planning permission</a>. It&#8217;s the junction where Ashley Lennon was hit and killed by a truck driver in May 2019 but no changes have been made to the road. The area is bordered by a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation (SINC) to the west and Palacerigg Country Park to the east. It&#8217;s also near the northern tip of the proposed East Airdrie Link Road (which may be one reason that&#8217;s being built). <h4 class="wp-block-heading" id="one-five">1.5: North East Districts: Townhead, Cowcaddens, Learning Quarter and Merchant City DRF</h4>



<p><strong>Council:&nbsp;</strong>Glasgow City.<br><strong>Subject:&nbsp;</strong>District Regeneration Frameworks for four areas in the north-east of the city centre. These were developed by teams of European and local consultants after previous&nbsp;<a href="https://www.gobike.org/consultation-digest-local-issue-74-24-november-2020-12604#one-two">consultation in late 2020</a>. Each document has a comprehensive plan for its area (50+ pages). These include some fairly radical changes, especially around the M8. Also, there is a refreshing focus on opening up active travel routes through current barriers (improving permeability). However, these may be challenging to deliver. <h4 class="wp-block-heading" id="one-six">1.6:&nbsp;NCN74 Uddingston to Bothwell realignment</h4>



<p><strong>Council:&nbsp;</strong>South Lanarkshire.<br><strong>Subject:</strong>&nbsp;A long-awaited consultation about plans to divert a section of NCN74 at Strathclyde Park. The current route loops up the (steep) Furlongs, onto Bothwell Rd, up alongside the East Kilbride Expressway to Glasgow Rd, down Station Rd in Blantyre to the pedestrian bridge and up to Station Rd in Bothwell. These proposals would change this to a much more direct route from the Raith Interchange, up the steep, pot-holed Langside Rd and across the busy Hamilton Rd on the way to Station Rd. There’s a potential alternative to SLC’s plans (slightly longer but less steep/busy) by turning right onto Laighlands Rd/Bothwellpark Rd then across to Olifard Ave/Appledore Cres. Also, there’s the question of conflict with pedestrians past Strathclyde Park loch. <p><strong>Council:&nbsp;</strong>Glasgow City.<br><strong>Areas: </strong>Yoker, Scotstoun, Jordanhill and Whiteinch.<br><strong>Subject:&nbsp;</strong>A Liveable Neighbourhoods area in the north-west of the city. These areas featured in a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=juD8-L4_qp4" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">recent cycling video by John Munro</a> of Birmingham University. Within it, he highlighted the gap in cycling provision between the end of the old railway path at South St and the busy Thornwood Roundabout on Dumbarton Rd. Meanwhile, the former Jordanhill Training College site is one of the bigger new housing developments in the wider area. The <a href="https://www.my-gln.scot/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">MyGLN website</a> seems to have been set up for this Liveable Neighbourhood and Royston to Hogganfield. It&#8217;s run by the companies <a href="https://www.mottmac.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mott MacDonald</a>, <a href="http://www.urbanmovement.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Urban Movement</a> and <a href="https://new-practice.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New Practice</a>. <p><strong>Council:&nbsp;</strong>Glasgow City.<br><strong>Areas: </strong>Royston, Sighthill, Germiston, Blackhill and Hogganfield.<br><strong>Subject:&nbsp;</strong>Neighbourhoods in the north-east of the city between the M8 and the railway. Furthest west is Sighthill, which is nearing completion after a total rebuilt in the last few years. East of Springburn Road are Royston and Germiston and their main street, Royston Rd. It hasn&#8217;t got any cycling infrastructure on the flat but was the subject of a <a href="https://www.gobike.org/consultation-digest-local-issue-93-17-august-2021-14883#one-five" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">project by Rosemount Development Trust</a> in 2021. Where Royston Rd climbs up to Blackhill there&#8217;s the Spaces for People cycle lanes. Another project, <a href="https://www.gobike.org/consultation-digest-local-issue-91-20-july-2021-14629#one-two">Flourishing Molendinar</a>, have big plans for Blackhill, Cumbernauld Rd (by Hogganfield Park) and the bridge to Smithycroft/Riddrie. Hogganfield Loch is part of the <a href="https://www.sevenlochs.org/CHttpHandler.ashx?id=41788&amp;p=0" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Seven Lochs Wetland Park (PDF map)</a>. Carntyne Square is shown for Dennistoun to Cranhill LN. The Langside to Toryglen LN has a view of the Battle of Langside monument. There&#8217;s a view of the Dummy Railway path for Ruchill to Cowlairs LN. Most interesting is the view of Paisley Road West, Cessnock for the Govan to Kingston LN. It seems to ‘put a marker down’ for cycletracks on PRW. However, the recent <a href="https://www.glasgow.gov.uk/councillorsandcommittees/submissiondocuments.asp?submissionid=107637" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Glasgow Bus Partnership report to GCC</a> only mentioned bus lanes, not bike lanes. <p><strong>Council:</strong>&nbsp;Renfrewshire. <br><strong>Subject:</strong> Giving local people some say over how the Council should spend its budget. Renfrewshire have allocated £1.2million for local infrastructure projects – with up to £50,000 available for each idea put forward by residents. Over 2,800 suggestions were submitted, including improvements to roads, footpaths, lighting, road safety. A shortlist of 115 feasible projects is being put to the vote; by area. You have to enter a PA postcode to see the ideas in that area, and then choose projects in order of preference. There are more cosmetic than radical suggestions but it&#8217;s still an opportunity for local people. <br><strong>Deadline:<strong> 11</strong></strong> <strong>December 2022.</strong></p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading" id="one-two">1.2: Erskine junction safety</h4>



<p><strong>Council:</strong>&nbsp;Renfrewshire.<br><strong>Area:</strong> Main roads junctions in south and east Erskine. <br><strong>Subject:</strong> Three junctions on Old Greenock Rd (at Linburn Rd, Craigends Drive and Barhill Rd). Also, the junction of Kilpatrick Drive and the A726. None of the junctions look cycling friendly. <p><strong>Council:</strong>&nbsp;North Lanarkshire.<br><strong>Subject:</strong> Further consultation on Stage 2 of this proposed trunk road (previously the <a href="https://www.thefreelibrary.com/pounds+500m+LIFELINE+IS+ON+THE+RIGHT+ROAD%3B+Exclusive+New+m-way+link...-a0161139442" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Airdrie Bypass</a>). It&#8217;s a City Deal project as part of the <a href="https://www.northlanarkshire.gov.uk/regeneration-and-investment/glasgow-city-region-city-deal/pan-lanarkshire-orbital-transport-corridor/about-pan-lanarkshire-orbital-transport-corridor" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Pan-Lanarkshire Orbital Transport Corridor</a> (joining the M80, M8 and M74 via Ravenscraig/Motherwell). The council have chosen a route option for EALR and are showing their working. You get to comment on it but many of the decisions have already been taken. That includes the active travel provision – a shared pavement. <p><strong>Council:</strong>&nbsp;Glasgow City.<br><strong>Area:</strong> North Glasgow –&nbsp;Maryhill, Gilsochill and Ruchill.<br><strong>Subject: </strong>Not strictly linked to a consultation but the bridge and its opening event have had a lot of positive feedback. It spans a t-junction in the Forth &amp; Clyde canal to save going down through the narrow road tunnel on Lochburn Rd. The <a href="https://www.gobike.org/consultation-digest-local-issue-81-2-march-2021-13315#one-five" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">towpath closed in Spring 2021</a> until Autumn 2022. The new bridge has been in use for a few months (including on a <a href="https://www.gobike.org/gobike-november-cycle-ride-sunday-06-november-18784" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">recent GoBike ride</a>). However, the official opening took place on Saturday 3 December with a light show and a great turnout by locals. </p>

<p>August opens with Cycle to Work Day and plenty of Traffic Orders from Glasgow, East Ayrshire&nbsp;and East Dunbartonshire. There&#8217;s analysis of the event for the eastern side of Argyle St, with accessibility issues raised again. Also, a major city centre plan being pushed by GCC (with several emails to GoBike). <p>The second stage of consultation about the Raeberry Street Quietway&nbsp;is due to open tomorrow (5 August). This follows the <a href="https://www.gobike.org/consultation-digest-local-issue-99-11-november-2021-15879#one-twelve" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">first phase consultation from late 2021</a> and is part of the wider <a href="https://www.glasgow.gov.uk/connectingwoodside" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Connecting Woodside project</a>. <h4 class="wp-block-heading" id="one-one">1.1: Paisley Town Centre – Causeyside Street Regeneration</h4>



<p><strong>Council:&nbsp;</strong>Renfrewshire.<br><strong>Area:</strong>&nbsp;Causeyside St and St Mirren St between Paisley Canal and Gilmour St train stations.<br><strong>Subject:</strong>&nbsp;A potentially very useful link on a main road. A segregated cycletrack is proposed between the pedestrianised part of Gilmour St down Causeyside St to just past Stow Brae (where there’s a link to NCN75 at Telford’s). Renfrewshire Council&nbsp;<a href="https://www.gobike.org/consultation-digest-local-issue-108-17-march-2022-16958#two-one" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">removed some Spaces for People projects</a>&nbsp;and have very little protected, on-road infrastructure. So, even though the proposed cycletrack would be 2-way, it’s a big step forward for the area. Talk of keeping/adding car parking spaces may jar but it’s one less stick for critics to beat it with. There will still be many hurdles to clear, including accessibility and reaction from shoppers/shopkeepers. The plans are by Amey, better known for their trunk road work. <h4 class="wp-block-heading" id="one-two">1.2: Ayr to Prestwick Active Travel Route</h4>



<p><strong>Organisation:</strong>&nbsp;Ayrshire Roads Alliance (on behalf of&nbsp;South Ayrshire Council).<br><strong>Subject:</strong>&nbsp;An upgraded&nbsp;<em>“active travel route linking Ayr Esplanade to Prestwick Town Train Station will be proposed. It is envisaged that the proposed route will also connect to existing core paths in addition to future aspirational schemes such as Accessible Ayr, The Culzean Way and the Prestwick to Barassie Active Travel Route.<em>”</em></em>&nbsp;If it goes ahead, it would replace part of the current NCN7 along the coast, so has potential for cycle tourism as well as local journeys. There are photos of issues along the current route but no plans/visuals. So, it seems to be an early consultation to get comments (and maybe gauge demand?). <p><strong>Council:&nbsp;</strong>Glasgow City.<br><strong>Area:</strong>&nbsp;Battlefield Road, Grange Road, Langside Road and Queens Drive (between Queen’s Park and Mount Florida).<br><strong>Subject:</strong>&nbsp;Relaunch of the former Battlefield Street Design project after a few years on hold during the pandemic. It features a uni-directional extension to the South City Way cycletrack running alongside Queen’s Park and down Battlefield Road. Also, there would be major changes to junctions at Queen’s Drive, Langside Rd and Battlefield Rest (removing a road between it and the old Victoria Hospital site). <p><strong>Council:&nbsp;</strong>Glasgow City.<br><strong>Area:</strong>&nbsp;Northern end of Kittochside Road, Carmunnock (between Glasgow and East Kilbride).<br><strong>Subject:</strong>&nbsp;Installing 13 speed cushions (with bollards) on the wider sections of Kittochside Rd as it comes past housing into the village. On the narrow section south of the village (with hedgerows either side), motor vehicles may have to slow down to pass each other. However, despite having no pavements, the southern part of the road is also used by pedestrians and people cycling. Armour St will be filtered at its western end so traffic for Morrisons has to use Barrack St. Various parking bays and build-outs are planned (plus secure bike parking). They&#8217;re newly promoted back to the Scottish Premiership so bigger clubs, with more supporters, will be visiting. The club and stadium are one of the oldest in Scotland so they&#8217;re in the middle of a residential area. The proposed measures seem to be mainly painted lines and signage. Includes Leverndale, Nitshill, Priesthill and Darnley neighbourhoods.<br><strong>Subject:</strong>&nbsp;The latest SDF follows others for North Glasgow, Inner East, etc. and looks at the economy, environment and transport over the next few decades. This part of Glasgow juts out between Barrhead and Thornliebank so connections with East Renfrewshire are important. It covers part of Dams to Darnley Country Park so has some things in common with the recent&nbsp;<a href="https://www.gobike.org/consultation-digest-local-issue-112-9-june-2022-17484#one-two" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Barrhead consultation map</a>. Also, Braidcraft Rd and Brockburn Rd have Spaces for People lanes (as does Corkerhill Rd to north). However, there are some hellish junctions around Silverburn Shopping Centre. The main change would be putting a one-way road through the current pedestrianised blocks of Arygle St, to help speed up bus routes (with protected contraflow cycle lane). Further east, there would be one-way cycletracks on either side of the road. <p>We will head southwest out of Glasgow, passing through Bellahouston and Pollok. We will pick up paths alongside the Levern Water and follow these into Barrhead. Then we’ll climb up the hill out of the town, before ending up at the Gleniffer Braes. </p>

<p>We will then descend into southern Paisley and head for the White Cart path back into Glasgow, with an option to go via the Clyde Tunnel. We’ll stop for a break at Gleniffer Braes Country Park, so bring something to eat.<br>25 miles, with significant climbing. A section will be on an unsurfaced path at Gleniffer Braes Country Park.</p>

<p><strong>Council: </strong>Renfrewshire.<br><strong>Area:</strong> Causeyside St and St Mirren St between Paisley Canal and Gilmour St train stations. <br><strong>Subject:</strong> A potentially very useful link on a main road. A segregated cycletrack is proposed between the pedestrianised part of Gilmour St down Causeyside St to just past Stow Brae (where there&#8217;s a link to NCN75 at Telford&#8217;s). Renfrewshire Council <a href="https://www.gobike.org/consultation-digest-local-issue-108-17-march-2022-16958#two-one" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">removed some Spaces for People projects</a> and have very little protected, on-road infrastructure. So, even though the proposed cycletrack would be 2-way, it&#8217;s still a big step forward for the area. Talk of keeping/adding car parking spaces may jar but it&#8217;s one less stick for critics to beat it with. There will still be many hurdles to clear, including accessibility and reaction from shoppers/shopkeepers. The plans are by Amey, better known for their trunk road work. <p><strong>Organisation:</strong>&nbsp;Ayrshire Roads Alliance (on behalf of&nbsp;South Ayrshire Council).<br><strong>Subject:</strong>&nbsp;An upgraded <em>“active travel route linking Ayr Esplanade to Prestwick Town Train Station will be proposed. It is envisaged that the proposed route will also connect to existing core paths in addition to future aspirational schemes such as Accessible Ayr, The Culzean Way and the Prestwick to Barassie Active Travel Route.<em>”</em></em> If it goes ahead, it would replace part of the current NCN7 along the coast, so has potential for cycle tourism as well as local journeys. There are photos of issues along the current route but no plans/visuals. So, it seems to be an early consultation to get comments (and maybe gauge demand?). <p><strong>Council:&nbsp;</strong>Glasgow City.<br><strong>Area:</strong>&nbsp;Battlefield Road, Grange Road, Langside Road and Queens Drive (between Queen’s Park and Mount Florida).<br><strong>Subject:</strong>&nbsp;Relaunch of the former Battlefield Street Design project after a few years on hold during the pandemic. It features a uni-directional extension to the South City Way cycletrack running alongside Queen&#8217;s Park and down Battlefield Road. Also, there would be major changes to junctions at Queen&#8217;s Drive, Langside Rd and Battlefield Rest (removing a road between it and the old Victoria Hospital site). <p><strong>Council:&nbsp;</strong>Glasgow City.<br><strong>Area:</strong>&nbsp;George Square and surrounding streets from Block C of the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.glasgow.gov.uk/avenues" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Avenues project</a>.<br><strong>Subject:</strong>&nbsp;The next step in consultation about the square and surroundings (last round was in Feb/Mar). New visualisations show the designers have got the message about more greenery. They&#8217;re an improvement on the current, quite barren square but are not the finished article. Which is just as well, since the shared spaces and road treatments at north and south look like they&#8217;d need more work. There are panels in the square for the public to view. Drop-in sessions will be held next to them on Saturday 6 August (1pm to 4pm) and Thursday 18 August (4pm to 7pm). <h4 class="wp-block-heading" id="one-six">1.6: Greater Pollok Strategic Development Framework</h4>



<p><strong>Council:&nbsp;</strong>Glasgow City.<br><strong>Area:</strong>&nbsp;South-western corner of Glasgow at edge of M77 and East Renfrewshire. Includes Leverndale, Nitshill, Priesthill and Darnley neighbourhoods.<br><strong>Subject:</strong>&nbsp;The latest SDF follows others for North Glasgow, Inner East, etc. and looks at the economy, environment and transport over the next few decades. This part of Glasgow juts out between Barrhead and Thornliebank so connections with East Renfrewshire are important. It covers part of Dams to Darnley Country Park so has some things in common with the recent&nbsp;<a href="https://www.gobike.org/consultation-digest-local-issue-112-9-june-2022-17484#one-two" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Barrhead consultation map</a>. Also, Braidcraft Rd and Brockburn Rd have Spaces for People lanes (as does Corkerhill Rd to north). However, there are some hellish junctions around Silverburn Shopping Centre. A council vote was 9:2 in favour of keeping the lanes for another six months, with a further review in September. Photos in the consultation survey show a mixture of on-road ‘soft’ segregation and painted lanes on footways and across side roads. <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Happy New Year!</h2>



<p>The first Digest of 2022 has a few loose ends to clear up from last year. Firstly, there&#8217;s the proposed regeneration of Shawlands Arcade on Kilmarnock Rd (as shown in split image, above). Secondly, there&#8217;s North Lanarkshire Council&#8217;s Active Travel strategy, which is a long way off the pace set by Glasgow&#8217;s.</p>



<p>The last edition featured negative reaction to Spaces for People lanes in East Kilbride, South Lanarkshire. Another issue has come up elsewhere – a petition against SfP lanes between Paisley and Howwood in Renfrewshire. </p>



<p>While cycling is usually on the agenda in Glasgow it&#8217;s often missed out in surrounding areas, which feed the city&#8217;s traffic issues. Cars are king in suburban towns so any projects that try to redress the balance will need support. <meta charset="utf-8">On a more positive note, <a href="https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/in-your-area/renfrewshire/almost-150000-invested-renfrewshires-cycling-25712875" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sustrans are funding minor upgrades to existing <abbr title="National Cycle Network">NCN</abbr> routes in Renfrewshire</a> and elsewhere. </p>

However, the local Community Council are now collating ideas for the public spaces. They want links or photos of places that people like; to use as inspiration. There are no cycle lanes in the current plans (middle alley between buildings has steps). Older, more polluting motor vehicles will be charged for driving into the zone. Its boundary has changed slightly. Parts of some streets around the edges of the zone have been added to it and the Stow College/GSA building has been left out. The LEZ is due to begin on 31 May 2022 but enforcement won’t kick in until a year later. When fines do come in they escalate for repeat offences. Transport links include roads like Duke St, Alexandra Parade, Cumbernauld Rd and Edinburgh Rd plus a few train stations. Apart from a few parks most big destinations are towards the city centre end –&nbsp;Necropolis, Tennents brewery and City Park offices. While Glasgow Royal Infirmary is just outside western edge of area. Dennistoun has held on to a few Spaces for People measures (from its&nbsp;<a href="https://www.gobike.org/consultation-digest-local-issue-88-8-june-2021-14260#three-two" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">failed LTN</a>) but there’s very little infrastructure elsewhere. Major destinations include Ibrox Stadium and the Southern General/Queen Elizabeth Uni Hospital (see next item). There’s some cycling infrastructure around Festival Park/Pacific Quay but no proper links to major routes like the nearby South West City Way. Nearby Sighthill is being completely rebuilt including a segregated&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cyclestreets.net/location/111472/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cycle route on St Rollox Dr</a>. However, Cowlairs, Ruchill and Possilpark have a lot of derelict sites. The site wraps around a regenerated housing estate, linking former wasteground with the woodland and ponds. Trails, outdoor play equipment and a bike pump track have been installed. <p><meta charset="utf-8"><strong>Council:</strong>&nbsp;<meta charset="utf-8">North Lanarkshire.<br><strong>Subject:</strong>&nbsp;This strategy has been in the pipeline since 2020 but only reached GoBike in late 2021. We&#8217;re not aware of any public consultation. It arrives along with plans for <a href="https://www.gobike.org/consultation-digest-local-issue-80-16-february-2021-13179#two-one" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">redevelopment of town centres</a> and <a href="https://www.gobike.org/consultation-digest-local-issue-92-3-august-2021-14734#one-nine" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">country parks</a> plus NLC&#8217;s <a href="https://www.gobike.org/consultation-digest-local-issue-81-2-march-2021-13315#one-two" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Town/Community Hubs</a> (schools as community centres). While neighbouring South Lanarkshire is building segregated lanes on roads, North Lanarkshire are focusing on shared paths. The strategy has a single paragraph in the PDF version about road space reallocation. However, it has pages of detail about shared path construction. The focus on routes away from main roads may come from NLC&#8217;s work with <a href="https://www.gcvgreennetwork.gov.uk/guide-to-the-partnership/our-role" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Glasgow &amp; Clyde Valley (GCV) Green Network</a>.
