<p>Just six of us set off on a rainy day &#8211; the official first day of spring, for a journey to the north -east of the city. Yet again, there was somewhere new for each of us.</p>

<span id="more-25610"></span>

<p>We cycled into the city and up to Sighthill, before turning east to skirt Hogganfield Loch, some of our route along cycle lanes part full of mud and past flytipping sites. We skirted Lenzie and cycled through Merkland, before heading towards the Forth and Clyde Canal.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" width="525" height="475" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Merkland-signpost-010326.jpeg?resize=525%2C475&#038;ssl=1" alt="" class="wp-image-25616" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Merkland-signpost-010326.jpeg?resize=600%2C543&amp;ssl=1 600w, https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Merkland-signpost-010326.jpeg?resize=300%2C271&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Merkland-signpost-010326.jpeg?w=640&amp;ssl=1 640w" sizes="(max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px" /></figure>

<p>Here we met the most surprising structure on the ride:<br></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" width="525" height="394" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Tintock-Rd-bridge-under-Forth-and-Clyde-canal-010326.jpeg?resize=525%2C394&#038;ssl=1" alt="" class="wp-image-25617" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Tintock-Rd-bridge-under-Forth-and-Clyde-canal-010326.jpeg?resize=600%2C450&amp;ssl=1 600w, https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Tintock-Rd-bridge-under-Forth-and-Clyde-canal-010326.jpeg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Tintock-Rd-bridge-under-Forth-and-Clyde-canal-010326.jpeg?w=640&amp;ssl=1 640w" sizes="(max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px" /></figure>

<p>Yes, we stopped at the south side and watched cars drive through before we ventured under the bridge, carefully keeping to the centre of the road to smile happily for this photo.</p>

<p>Then it was up to the canal for the ride back to Glasgow, with a lunch stop at the Stables Pub en route.<br>The ride officially finished at the Stockingfield Bridge over the canal, distance 23 miles with riders then making their way back home, most of us towards the city.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="525" height="394" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Tintock-Road-path-to-Forth-and-Clyde-Canal-010326.jpeg?resize=525%2C394&#038;ssl=1" alt="" class="wp-image-25618" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Tintock-Road-path-to-Forth-and-Clyde-Canal-010326.jpeg?resize=600%2C450&amp;ssl=1 600w, https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Tintock-Road-path-to-Forth-and-Clyde-Canal-010326.jpeg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Tintock-Road-path-to-Forth-and-Clyde-Canal-010326.jpeg?w=640&amp;ssl=1 640w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px" /></figure>

<p>Here&#8217;s the route, should you wish to check it out: <a href="https://www.plotaroute.com/route/3247559?units=km">https://www.plotaroute.com/route/3247559?units=km</a></p>

<p>Our next ride will be on Sunday, 05 April, heading west to Erskine, see <a href="https://www.gobike.org/about-us/cycle-ride">here</a> for details</p>

<p>Feedback that this new road has been given planning permission. Back in 2024 (<a href="https://www.gobike.org/consultation-digest-local-issue-151-25-january-2024-21156#two-two">Digest 151</a>), the route was chosen to extend the current Westerhill Road north past Low Moss prison. It would then join Kirkintilloch Rd (A803 –&nbsp;between Cadder/The Stables pub). EDC say it will include a <em>“new active travel route for walking, wheeling and cycling.”</em> In the ‘General arrangement’ layout, this seems to be a shared pavement continuing from the crossing at the northern end of the Wester Way (near the former Aviva office building). Unfortunately, since some parts (like Cole Rd) aren&#8217;t being upgraded, the AT route stops near Loretto playing fields. A dashed orange line indicates ‘Masterplan Future Active Travel route’. That may refer to the ‘Primary Active Travel route’ in a previous Planning Guidance document (see <a href="https://www.gobike.org/consultation-digest-local-issue-157-18-april-2024-21671#one-seven">Digest 157</a>). There&#8217;s no detail on why it&#8217;s not being built along with the road. Also, it&#8217;s not clear why a redundant section of Crosshill Rd will be used for “mosaic habitat” instead of cycling?<br><strong>Links:</strong>&nbsp;<a href="https://www.eastdunbarton.gov.uk/news/2025/november/planning-application-approved-for-the-new-westerhill-development-road">East Dunbartonshire Council WDR article</a> and <a href="https://planning.eastdunbarton.gov.uk/online-applications/applicationDetails.do?activeTab=summary&amp;keyVal=STDJ37GJHBZ00">Planning application TP/ED/25/0151</a>.</p>

<p>Glasgow City Council say: <em>“As&nbsp;part of the plans to improve Drumchapel town centre, we want your views on how best to change the roads layout of Kinfauns Drive from Hecla Ave down to Duntreath Ave, to make it easier to get around the area and make it more attractive.”</em> The visuals show the curving raised platform has gone from the northern corner of Kinfauns Dr. Further south, the biggest change in the plans is removing the Drumchapel Roundabout. A (two-stage) crossing will be added on Duntreath Ave with an interesting junction at Aldi. <p>A long overdue project for active travel improvements around Thornwood Roundabout and National Cycle Network Route 7 (NCN7). The roundabout plans are for new crossings and pavements/shared paths (widened onto verges). Crossings at north and east are 2-stage but close to ‘desire line’, with a few pinch points at corners. Crossings at west and south are set much further back (on existing paths). Sawmill St has a shared path south to crossings to a bi-directional cycletrack on South St/Castlebank St. That protected route runs most of the way to Pointhouse Place where there’s a shared path from the corner at the Riverside Museum. There’s a useful fly-through video of the route on the council webpage (and many visuals, which show cyclists riding on the right!). The cycletrack continues west along South St to the crossing at the end of the old railway path on the north side (near Dilwara Ave). While Thornwood roundabout is still car-dominated the plans are an upgrade for active travel. The cycletrack would be a very welcome improvement compared to NCN7’s current shared pavement.<br><strong>Links:</strong>&nbsp;<a href="https://glasgow.gov.uk/thornwood">Thornwood-NCN7 consultation</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/ThornwoodRoundaboutNCN7/">Thornwood-NCN7 survey</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://glasgow.gov.uk/media/22141/Thornwood-RA-NCN7-draft-325394-04/pdf/Thornwood_RA_-NCN7.-_draft-325394-04.pdf?m=1761668819793">Thornwood roundabout plans</a>&nbsp;(PDF) and&nbsp;<a href="https://glasgow.gov.uk/media/22142/TPD-5401-M-01-02-A0-2022-metric-metres/pdf/TPD-5401-M-01-02-A0_2022_metric_metres.pdf?m=1761668820160">NCN7 plans</a>&nbsp;(PDF).<br><strong>Deadline: Sunday 17 December 2025.</strong></p>

<p>North Lanarkshire Council say: <em>“The project is funded by NLC through the <a href="https://glasgowcityregion.co.uk/city-deal/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Glasgow City Region Deal</a> which provides for infrastructure projects that connect people with employment opportunities. Three of the five routes are already at the detailed design stage, while the remaining two are at the concept design stage.<em>”</em></em> The latter runs through Bellshill town centre. The preferred route uses mostly back streets (John St and an awkward junction onto Dean St). Alternatives in the consultation include a route on Main St (which has a high school and very wide pavements in places). As it goes east, the route uses main roads through Mossend and Holytown towards EuroCentral (A755 corridor). North Lanarkshire favour widened pavements over on-road protected lanes so it&#8217;s likely this route will follow the pattern set in Motherwell (Muir St), Wishaw (Alexander St) and elsewhere.<br><strong>Links:</strong> <a href="https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/0857acf97b714cadbacf6a94a416dbf0">Eurocentral Active Travel Links StoryMap</a>, <a href="https://forms.office.com/Pages/DesignPageV2.aspx?origin=NeoPortalPage&amp;subpage=design&amp;id=LG88QZohkkaX0_K02AKB52gst-nEdRdKqJlhiPPgn5BUOUlWN0YzTjkySlZJOEk4U1hFSVRZVkRESy4u&amp;topview=Prefill">Bellshill–Eurocentral survey</a><br><strong>Deadline: 30 November 2025.</strong></p>

The curved layout seems to have fewer stances than the current bus station. <h3 class="wp-block-heading">Update on Hamilton Town Centre Masterplan</h3>

<p>An <a href="https://www.southlanarkshireview.scot/news/article/2673/masterplan_for_hamilton_town_centre_taking_shape">update from South Lanarkshire Council</a> is mostly about progress with property. Sadly, this includes demolishing the facade of the <a href="https://maps.app.goo.gl/qmUzeCq6uNnnSVTGA">former Vogue Bingo hall on Keith St</a> (apparently as it&#8217;s now unsafe). Other negative news includes the trial reintroduction of cars on Quarry St being made permanent. Quarry St used to be pedestrianised – see featured image at top of post from 2012 (with Vogue building in background). Car parking had crept up since the pandemic (leading to the trial). There should be disabled parking and it always had some access for loading, etc. However, officially opening the street to all cars removes safe space for walking, wheeling and cycling (even if it&#8217;s still one-way and not really a through road).</p>

<p>Also, work is starting to look at renewing the Duke St multi-storey car park –&nbsp;it&#8217;s due to be demolished (apart from the section under Wyler Tower!). However, the plan is to build a new multi-storey in the same place, on the wrong side of the road from the shops! It could potentially have been moved behind Quarry&nbsp;St, in the footprint of the current Regent Shopping Centre, if road access had been adjusted (see <a href="https://dashedlines.uk/places/alternative-hamilton-masterplan/">alternative plans</a>, ignored by SLC). There is due to be an improved pedestrian/cycle path behind the Duke St car park, to Hamilton Central station, but it doesn&#8217;t seem like the rest of the town centre will be very cycle-friendly.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Local Action Fund</h3>

<p>The Local Action Fund is £50,000 for each of the 20 council wards in South Lanarkshire. Several projects have already been awarded but there is funding remaining in some wards. There doesn&#8217;t seem to be a formal consultation or application process – constituents have to contact their councillors, who will decide where the remaining funds go.</p>

<p>For example, <a href="https://www.southlanarkshire.gov.uk/view/news/article/2683/local_action_fund_split_to_support_wide_range_of_local_projects">Rutherglen South, Ward 11, reportedly has £23,200 still to be spent</a> by Councillors Robert Brown (who has attended GoBike hustings in the past),&nbsp;Margaret Cowie and Carol Nugent. Could some of the funding go towards improving local active travel routes?</p>

<p>Ten of us set off yesterday from the SEC for a 46 mile round trip, five of us on conventional bikes and five using electric assistance &#8211; and there were some hills, so the power was switched on!</p>

<span id="more-24451"></span>

<p>We made our way out to the canal at Anniesland and then up to Milngavie before getting on to the West Highland Way. Not ideal for most of us, better with a mountain bike, but there were some glorious views:</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="525" height="394" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Melvin-and-Tricia-WHW-03-Aug-25.jpg?resize=525%2C394&#038;ssl=1" alt="" class="wp-image-24458" style="width:674px;height:auto" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Melvin-and-Tricia-WHW-03-Aug-25.jpg?resize=600%2C450&amp;ssl=1 600w, https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Melvin-and-Tricia-WHW-03-Aug-25.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Melvin-and-Tricia-WHW-03-Aug-25.jpg?resize=1536%2C1152&amp;ssl=1 1536w, https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Melvin-and-Tricia-WHW-03-Aug-25.jpg?w=1600&amp;ssl=1 1600w, https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Melvin-and-Tricia-WHW-03-Aug-25.jpg?w=1050&amp;ssl=1 1050w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px" /></figure>

<p>The railway path was good to cycle on, although walkers were out in abundance &#8211; some for a short stroll and some doing the whole West Highland Way. We had lunch in Killearn, looking across the wonderful view and then we cycled down the hill and on to the cycle path that took us over the Endrick Water and to Croftamie.<br></p>

<p>We continued on to Jamestown and Alexandria, from where we followed the path along the River Leven to Dumbarton.<br>This was easy cycling and after a wee rest in Dumbarton we all made our way back to Glasgow, some following the canal all the way to the city and some following the old railway line through Bowling.</p>

<p><strong>Council:</strong>&nbsp;Glasgow.<br><strong>Subject:&nbsp;</strong>At long last, the first public consultations have begun on <a href="https://citizen.glascc1-prd.gosshosted.com/media/5895/City-Network-Delivery-Plan/pdf/City_Network_Final_Delivery_Plan.pdf?m=638242454912770000">Glasgow&#8217;s City Network</a>, a city-wide network of segregated cycle lanes. These cover Inner North and South, two of the three areas intended for Phase 1 of construction. The third, Greater Govan, is also being designed.</p>

<p>The networks are the most complete proposal we have seen in Scotland. Inner North provides 24km of cycle lanes, and South provides 33km. These are real networks rather than arterial &#8220;highways&#8221;. If you only fill in one consultation this year, make it this one. It is incredibly important to show our support.</p>

<p>You can fill in the<a href="https://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/ATSInnerNorthAndSouth/" data-type="link" data-id="https://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/ATSInnerNorthAndSouth/"> consultation online</a> until October 20th, and attend these public events:</p>

<p>There&#8217;s another event about Elderslie <strong>TODAY</strong> 2–7pm in Erskine Sport Centre.</p>

<p>There have been some responses about the future of the Digest. They&#8217;ve been split between ones who like the current Digest and those in favour of a more general newsletter.</p>

<p>I&#8217;m still open to receiving more responses. <strong>Please send your thoughts about the Digest to:&nbsp;<a href="mailto:consultations@gobike.org">consultations@gobike.org</a>.</strong></p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading" id="one-four">SPT Draft Regional Active Travel Strategy</h4>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="842" height="595" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/12-4-regional-transport-strategy-connecting-places-map.jpeg?resize=525%2C371&amp;ssl=1" alt="SPT's Connecting Places map" class="wp-image-22197" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/12-4-regional-transport-strategy-connecting-places-map.jpeg?w=842&amp;ssl=1 842w, https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/12-4-regional-transport-strategy-connecting-places-map.jpeg?resize=300%2C212&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/www.gobike.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/12-4-regional-transport-strategy-connecting-places-map.jpeg?resize=600%2C424&amp;ssl=1 600w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">SPT’s Connecting Places map loosely shows main routes (see link to PDF, below)</figcaption></figure>

<p><strong>Organisation:</strong>&nbsp;Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT).<br><strong>Subject:&nbsp;</strong>A chance to have your say about a proposed network of walking/cycling routes for towns and villages across the Strathclyde region. The gist is main ‘spoke’/corridor routes towards Glasgow, a few radial routes and a triangle of links in Ayrshire. These are shown in the loosely labelled&nbsp;<a href="https://www.spt.co.uk/media/1oljpf3z/12-4-regional-transport-strategy-connecting-places-map.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Connecting Places map</a>&nbsp;and other numbered&nbsp;<a href="https://www.spt.co.uk/active-future/ats-maps/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">AT network maps</a>&nbsp;(which can be hard to follow). SPT seem to prioritise cross-boundary routes, with varying results. For example, the existing route from Uddingston to Viewpark (SPT number it as 50_10) – a 1km upgrade where NCN 74 &amp; 75 meet on North/South Lanarkshire boundary – is a ‘top’ priority. Meanwhile, a niche cross-region route from Lanark to Livingstone (CRR_12 –&nbsp;South Lanarkshire/West Lothian) is ‘high’ priority at 32km! However, a 5km route from East Kilbride to Hamilton, South Lanarkshire (37_10) – currently 60mph roads with no safe cycle route between&nbsp;<a href="https://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/usscotfax/geography/townscities.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Scotland’s 6th and 8th largest settlements</a>&nbsp;– is only ‘medium’ priority!? The quality of cycle track described is an improvement on some of the plans SPT have funded in the past (most notably the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.gobike.org/consultation-digest-local-issue-141-10-august-2023-20066#one-five" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">redesign of Pollok Roundabout</a>). However, the strategy has no timescales or budgets and SPT lost all their capital funding last year. Despite that setback, they are influential in the regional&nbsp;<a href="https://www.glasgow.gov.uk/glasgowbuspartnership">Glasgow Bus Partnership</a>&nbsp;and on ‘bus vs cycle’ routes (via&nbsp;<a href="https://experience.arcgis.com/experience/dcb1ce8a723040779c8dd22829d75455" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Glasgow’s Spatial Delivery Framework</a>).<br><strong>Featured:</strong>&nbsp;<a href="https://www.gobike.org/consultation-extra-city-centre-spt-active-travel-strategies-20-10-23-20590">Consultation Extra (20-10-23)</a>.<br><strong>Website links:</strong>&nbsp;<a href="https://www.spt.co.uk/about-us/what-we-are-doing/regional-transport-strategy/active-future" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Regional Active Travel Strategy webpage</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/c1be3274d5a64b88ac7e948879e0f494" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Regional AT Strategy storymap</a>&nbsp;(including interactive Priority map),&nbsp;<a href="https://www.spt.co.uk/media/flnd4g1n/spt_active-travel-strategy-2024-2038.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">draft Regional ATS document</a>&nbsp;(PDF) and&nbsp;<a href="https://survey123.arcgis.com/share/ce4950d311c64d53be1f039ca8a43b12" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Regional ATS online survey</a>.<br><strong>Deadline:&nbsp;1 September 2024.</strong></p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading" id="two-one">2.1:&nbsp;Govan –&nbsp;(Yorkhill) Partick bridge opening</h4>

<p><strong>Council:</strong>&nbsp;Glasgow.<br><strong>Subject:&nbsp;</strong>The <a href="https://x.com/GlasgowCityRgn/status/1825461499705372830" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">official opening of the bridge will be on Friday 6 September</a>. This might be for invitees only but it&#8217;s meant to be open to the public on Saturday 7 Sept. Since it&#8217;s a swing bridge, that should mean the deck is closed so people can actually cross it. Either way, it will be a major new pedestrian/cycle link between Govan and the West End. It will allow people to cycle directly to/from the middle of Govan Road, avoiding Pacific Drive/Prince&#8217;s Quay. Also, the northern path from the bridge by the Riverside Museum goes to the (slightly hidden) underpass to Ferry Rd, where new protected cycleways lead towards Byres Road.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading" id="two-two">2.2:&nbsp;Irvine building openings</h4>

<p><strong>Council:</strong>&nbsp;North Ayrshire.<br><strong>Subject:&nbsp;</strong>Two openings in Irvine that could shape the next generation of active travellers. The former is Marress House, an office block converted into an early years centre. It&#8217;s next to the council HQ, by a dual carriageway, and opening a year late (but at least <a href="https://maps.app.goo.gl/XdyPUdP1fYGXDeBu8" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">has some secure bike parking</a>). The latter is <a href="https://www.eplanning.north-ayrshire.gov.uk/OnlinePlanning/caseDetails.do?caseType=Application&amp;keyVal=RELD46LEJ5A00" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Montgomerie Park Primary School</a>, in a recent estate with <a href="https://www.eplanning.north-ayrshire.gov.uk/OnlinePlanning/files/27F77DFB543F1EDD70744F42903E6D73/pdf/22_00514_PP-TRANSPORT_STATEMENT-1078003.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">decent existing (shared) paths</a> (despite being close to A736 Long Drive). Just to show, sometimes things do follow good practice…</p>

One extends the 30mph zone towards Milngavie, the other makes the existing northern pavement into a shared path. It seems to be set back at side roads but we&#8217;ll try to find out more about priority and infra plans. <br><strong>Website links:</strong>&nbsp;<a href="https://www.eastdunbarton.gov.uk/residents/roads-pavements-and-parking/traffic-regulation-orders" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">East Dunbartonshire TROs</a>.</p>
