As the engine revving goes on in Westminster, active travel consultations continue in the West of Scotland. One is for infrastructure that could be seen as levelling up for the North(-East of Glasgow). There’s more voting in the East End and Southside as locals have a say in how to spend funding. There are other city plans and town centre transformations in South Lanarkshire and Renfrewshire.

1.1: Glasgow Transport Strategy – Spatial Delivery Framework

Council: Glasgow City.
Subject: A second attempt at this consultation, which seemed to have a false start last month (and still has a broken link to the Transport Strategy – fixed below). The Spatial Delivery Framework covers some important parts of the strategy, especially the Bus Priority Corridors and Active Travel Network, which may conflict on some key routes. Also, Mobility Hubs, Freight Hubs, Road Hierarchy and the Environmental Report. Online sessions with stakeholders are taking place during September and early October.

1.2: Your Citizen Voice: Calton & Greater Pollok

Council: Glasgow City.
Subject: A chance for citizens to vote on proposals that came out of an earlier phase of consultation. Just over 500 people took part in the ‘Greater Pollok’ consultation while less than 200 did in Calton. Maybe as a result of that, the Pollok suggestions are more varied –often about upgrading and adding facilities – while the Calton ones are mostly about basic maintenance and CCTV. This process may not deliver much new infrastructure in these areas but it has potential to do so when rolled out elsewhere.

1.3: Local Development Plan for North Lanarkshire (Participation)

Council: North Lanarkshire.
Subject: NLC say: “The LDP… sets out the policies and proposals for future land use and development in North Lanarkshire. For example, it will guide where new housing, business and infrastructure will be located. …we want to make sure everyone with an interest can get involved. To help with this, we have prepared a draft Participation Statement.”
But, since the Participation Statement is a PDF file: “Accessibility: These files may not be suitable for users of assistive technology. Please contact us to request an accessible format.” Sigh…

1.4: Connecting Battlefield Phase 1 (Queens Drive and Langside Road TRO)

Council: Glasgow City.
Subject: A belated return for this extension to the South City Way. Last time, it had one-way lanes and went down Grange Rd. A lot seems to have happened since, including various comments by residents in Queen’s Drive. So, now there’s a two-way cycleway on the western side of Langside Rd (avoiding Queen’s Dr on the eastern side). Also, the route stays on Langside Rd instead of going down Grange Rd. After some discussion with GCC during Stage 1 of this TRO, we received the following:
“The proposed… Bi-directional cycle lanes on Langside to the monument are an addition to the project. I can confirm the cycle lanes towards the Battlefield monument will not replace the cycle lanes towards the [Battlefield] rest. The Bi-directional cycle lane on Langside to the monument will be constructed using light segregation. To confirm the cycle[way]s do connect, but for TRO purposes we only show the green hatch on the carriageway. The cycle lanes will join within the large buildout at the junction.” So, it seems we get a bonus lane with more still to come (even later than planned).

1.5: Our Johnstone (Town Centre consultation)

Council: Renfrewshire.
Subject: Consultation for Johnstone town centre, west of Paisley and Elderslie. The council say: “We want to hear from people who live, work and visit Johnstone Town Centre. This is to help us prioritise improvements, identify growth opportunities and develop a new strategic vision for its future.” There’s an online survey (by Page/Park architects no less) but no further details on any plans so far. There was a day of consultation events on 27 September in and around Houston Square.

1.6: Connecting Woodside – Phase 2 (St George’s Road)

Council: Glasgow City.
Subject: Updated plans for St George’s Road, between Charing Cross and N Woodside Rd. The 2-way protected cycleway will connect from the existing Avenue on Sauchiehall St and eventually link into existing infra next to Garscube Rd. There are some changes to junctions and new crossings along the route. The plans include the more direct crossing option at Phoenix Rd/Maryhill Rd. Also, there’s a rare sighting of a continuous pavement; at a side access road (with barrier) next to Woodside Library. Nearby is a novel cycle crossing going diagonally across a pedestrian crossing (with bike light phase apparently). Two side roads were already going to be restricted: Clarendon Place will be stopped up (opened at other end) and Glenfarg St will be filtered. Lastly, a cycle maintenance station has been added to the plans between Grant St and W Princes St (handy for the M8 off-ramp!).

1.7: North East Active Travel Routes

Council: Glasgow City.
Subject: Updated plans for a stretch of permanent protected cycle lanes on Wallacewell Rd, between Broomfield Rd and Northgate Rd. Wallacewell Rd will keep the ‘soft segregated’ lanes it’s had since before the pandemic. These plans would add permanent infrastructure at junctions and link to neighbouring streets and a school. The current roundabout at Northgate Rd was going to be replaced with a Dutch-style roundabout but will now have a ‘cyclops’-style junction with traffic lights (similar to those on the South City Way and A77 Ayr Rd). It’s good to see best practice being used with Barmulloch’s existing 1-way lanes, which were a template for Spaces for People. The mix of ‘soft segregated’ lanes and kerbed junctions in these plans could be a model for the rest of the City Network. However, the rows of black & white ‘armadillos’/‘zebras’ need to be well fixed down to remain continuous and avoid issues with car parking (see main post image).

1.8: East Kilbride town centre: A new vision

Council: South Lanarkshire.
Subject: The same old story of changing (online) shopping habits, empty units and redevelopment. Surprisingly, the most recent building, Centre West, is due to be demolished for housing, with a new north-south street put next to it. Other demolitions would create space for a new town square and car parking by the Queensway trunk road. However, there doesn’t seem to be any new crossing to the square or the path along the south of the site. The existing underpasses often have issues with broken glass and poor sight-lines/personal safety. This is why SLC are building segregated on-road cycle lanes on Churchill Avenue (not in the plans). Will the path be upgraded with improved links west near Blacklands Rd or across to Churchill Ave’s 2-way protected lanes? Also, could there be a further north-south link between Brouster Gate and the new square? Drop-in events were in the former Toytown shop, Princes Mall.

1.9: Waiting to Happen (junctions consultation)

Company: New Practice (architecture practice).
Subject: Community engagement by the practice where Emma Burke Newman worked. She was killed by an HGV driver while cycling at the George V bridge/Broomielaw junction, near the casino, in February 2023. This consultation is about that junction and two others – Gorbals St at the Clutha Vaults pub and Albert Bridge/Clyde St (by the High Court). NP say: “These junctions are our focus of study as they feel like incidents-waiting-to-happen, and one is the site of Emma’s death.” Diagrams show movements around each junction (and include the council’s plans for the South City Way extension at the Clutha). New Practice carried out previous consultations like George Square and have applied their knowledge to make a user friendly page. “We want to hear your experiences when walking, wheeling, scooting, or as a driver to help inform solutions specific to these locations and create systems for a safer city for us all.”

2.1: City centre secure cycle parking

Council: Glasgow City.
Subject: Secure cycle parking pilot scheme run by Cyclehoop (called Trips). It officially launched on 28 Sept with 20 city centre Bikehangars, like the units in many residential areas (but some painted in UCI stripes). You book a space using their mobile phone app, which also locks/unlocks the unit via Bluetooth (apparently, the unit’s batteries are very efficient and replaced regularly). Prices vary by time, similar to car parking charges (but much cheaper – for example, 30p for up to an hour). While not ideal for people without a smartphone the benefit is detailed data about usage. That will be important as this seems to be the first scheme of its kind in Scotland (if not the UK).

2.2: Duke St Avenue update

Council: Glasgow City.
Subject: An ‘Avenues Plus’ route, due to go between High St and Bellgrove St. The summer consultation had two options – putting the 2-way cycleway on either the northern or southern side of Duke St. The team had a stall at the secure cycle parking event and confirmed Option 1 has won. So, the bike lanes will be on the southern, Calton side of Duke St (which the designers told us they preferred at a previous consultation event!). While this option will simplify the junction at High St, it will present issues joining and leaving the 2-way lanes at the edge of Dennistoun. Duke St is Sustrans-funded and expected to start construction in 2024 but isn’t due to be complete until 2026. The cycleway on George St is part of the City Deal plans for George Sq and won’t start until later into 2024/2025. In the meantime, the Meatmarket development is due to build a path between Reidvale St and Melbourne St. Neighbouring ‘Calton Village’ will add a filter at Armour St to make a potential ‘Quietway’-style alternative route to Bell St in the Merchant City.

August opens with Cycle to Work Day and plenty of Traffic Orders from Glasgow, East Ayrshire and East Dunbartonshire. There’s analysis of the event for the eastern side of Argyle St, with accessibility issues raised again. Also, a major city centre plan being pushed by GCC (with several emails to GoBike). It has a few surprises which could help connect the city centre. (Tonight’s Digest was delayed by connection and commuting issues –apologies.)

Forthcoming consultations

The second stage of consultation about the Raeberry Street Quietway is due to open tomorrow (5 August). This follows the first phase consultation from late 2021 and is part of the wider Connecting Woodside project. Also starting soon (about a year after the Traffic Order) is the North Kelvin/North Woodside Restricted Parking Zone.

1: Current Consultations

1.1: Paisley Town Centre – Causeyside Street Regeneration

Council: Renfrewshire.
Area: Causeyside St and St Mirren St between Paisley Canal and Gilmour St train stations.
Subject: A potentially very useful link on a main road. A segregated cycletrack is proposed between the pedestrianised part of Gilmour St down Causeyside St to just past Stow Brae (where there’s a link to NCN75 at Telford’s). Renfrewshire Council removed some Spaces for People projects and have very little protected, on-road infrastructure. So, even though the proposed cycletrack would be 2-way, it’s a big step forward for the area. Talk of keeping/adding car parking spaces may jar but it’s one less stick for critics to beat it with. There will still be many hurdles to clear, including accessibility and reaction from shoppers/shopkeepers. The plans are by Amey, better known for their trunk road work. That may explain the lack of trees and the convoluted junction south of Stow Brae.

1.2: Ayr to Prestwick Active Travel Route

Organisation: Ayrshire Roads Alliance (on behalf of South Ayrshire Council).
Subject: An upgraded “active travel route linking Ayr Esplanade to Prestwick Town Train Station will be proposed. It is envisaged that the proposed route will also connect to existing core paths in addition to future aspirational schemes such as Accessible Ayr, The Culzean Way and the Prestwick to Barassie Active Travel Route.” If it goes ahead, it would replace part of the current NCN7 along the coast, so has potential for cycle tourism as well as local journeys. There are photos of issues along the current route but no plans/visuals. So, it seems to be an early consultation to get comments (and maybe gauge demand?). If so, the more responses the better.

1.3: Connecting Battlefield

Council: Glasgow City.
Area: Battlefield Road, Grange Road, Langside Road and Queens Drive (between Queen’s Park and Mount Florida).
Subject: Relaunch of the former Battlefield Street Design project after a few years on hold during the pandemic. It features a uni-directional extension to the South City Way cycletrack running alongside Queen’s Park and down Battlefield Road. Also, there would be major changes to junctions at Queen’s Drive, Langside Rd and Battlefield Rest (removing a road between it and the old Victoria Hospital site). The consultation site mentions the Liveable Neighbourhood plans for Langside to Toryglen so hopefully these will dovetail with the Battlefield plans.

1.4: Kittochside Road Traffic Calming Scheme

Council: Glasgow City.
Area: Northern end of Kittochside Road, Carmunnock (between Glasgow and East Kilbride).
Subject: Installing 13 speed cushions (with bollards) on the wider sections of Kittochside Rd as it comes past housing into the village. On the narrow section south of the village (with hedgerows either side), motor vehicles may have to slow down to pass each other. However, despite having no pavements, the southern part of the road is also used by pedestrians and people cycling. It remains to be seen if this scheme will have any effect on traffic levels and road safety overall.

1.5: Carmunnock Road Roundabout 20mph Speed Limit Zone

Council: Glasgow City.
Area: Not in Carmunnock – it’s the roundabout on the main road between King’s Park and Castlemilk (B766).
Subject: Extending the 20mph zone to the shops on the Carmunnock Rd/Brakemire Dr service roads next to the roundabout.

1.6: Barras North (Calton Village) TRO

Council: Glasgow City.
Area: North of Gallowgate, between Barrack St and Melbourne St in Calton.
Subject: Parking restrictions and traffic calming in area of new housing. The site, east of the Morrisons supermarket, had lain empty for decades. Wheatley Group is building new flats, called ‘Calton Village’ (for “mid-market rent”) and amending the road layout. Armour St will be filtered at its western end so traffic for Morrisons has to use Barrack St. Various parking bays and build-outs are planned (plus secure bike parking). However, Melbourne St is used as a rat run (to avoid traffic lights) so may be better with a diagonal filter to stop through traffic.

1.7: Laggan Road filter TRO

Council: Glasgow City.
Area: Laggan Rd in Muirend between Langside Dr and Merrylee Rd/Clarkston Rd.
Subject: Proposals for a filter at the north end of Laggan Rd at Coylton Rd. Presumably to stop drivers taking a shortcut between Langside Dr and Clarkston Rd. The filter has bollards and an exemption for cycling so should be permeable.

1.8: Rugby Park, Kilmarnock – Parking Consultation

Council: East Ayrshire.
Subject: A Traffic Regulation Order to bring in matchday parking restrictions on 30+ roads around Rugby Park, home of Kilmarnock FC. They’re newly promoted back to the Scottish Premiership so bigger clubs, with more supporters, will be visiting. The club and stadium are one of the oldest in Scotland so they’re in the middle of a residential area. The proposed measures seem to be mainly painted lines and signage. More ambitious event day parking zone proposals for Ibrox Stadium and Celtic Park were dropped by GCC in May.

1.9: George Square & ‘Block C’ Avenues – ‘Our Place’

Council: Glasgow City.
Area: George Square and surrounding streets from ‘Block C’ of the Avenues project (including West George St, North Hanover St, Hanover St, Miller St, John St, George St and Cochrane St).
Subject: The next step in the consultation about the square and its surroundings (the last round was in Feb/Mar). New visualisations show the designers have got the message about more greenery. They’re an improvement on the current, quite barren, square but are not final. Which is just as well, since the shared spaces and road treatments at north and south look like they’d need more work. There are display panels at the western side of George Sq showing designs for the square and Avenues. Drop-in sessions will be held next to the panels on…

1.10: Glasgow City Centre Transformation Plan

Council: Glasgow City.
Subject: Another plan about the city centre, with familiar themes from Districts to Avenues, but also some surprises. A few more cycle/pedestrian bridges have appeared in the maps, including across the M8 and River Clyde. Cathedral St is apparently being made bus-only, which raises questions about cycling provision (and traffic on High St).

1.11: Greater Pollok Strategic Development Framework

Council: Glasgow City.
Area: South-western corner of Glasgow at edge of M77 and East Renfrewshire. Includes Leverndale, Nitshill, Priesthill and Darnley neighbourhoods.
Subject: The latest SDF follows others for North Glasgow, Inner East, etc. and looks at the economy, environment and transport over the next few decades. This part of Glasgow juts out between Barrhead and Thornliebank so connections with East Renfrewshire are important. It covers part of Dams to Darnley Country Park so has some things in common with the recent Barrhead consultation map. Also, Braidcraft Rd and Brockburn Rd have Spaces for People lanes (as does Corkerhill Rd to north). However, there are some hellish junctions around Silverburn Shopping Centre. Later in the year GCC should write a draft strategy for further consultation.

1.12: Greenock to Battery Park SfP lane

Council: Inverclyde.
Subject: A Spaces for People temporary route between Greenock town centre and a coastal park. A council vote was 9:2 in favour of keeping the lanes for another six months, with a further review in September. Photos in the consultation survey show a mixture of on-road ‘soft’ segregation and painted lanes on footways and across side roads. While some of the junction and bus stop treatments may not be ideal, there seem to be decent protected sections too.

2.2: Garnethill Traffic Management and Parking Controls Order

Council: Glasgow City.
Subject: GCC say: “your objection was reported and considered. However, the Council have decided under its scheme of delegated functions to proceed with the proposal as advertised. The Order was made on 15th July 2022.”

2.3: ‘Argyle St East’ Avenue webinar notes

Council: Glasgow City.
Area: East of the Hielenman’s Umbrella/Central Station bridge along Argyle St and Trongate to the junction at Tolbooth steeple.
Subject: Notes from a recent online meeting about the eastern end of Argyle St. The meeting was introduced as “more about information than consultation” as plans have been underway since 2018. The main change would be putting a one-way road through the current pedestrianised blocks of Arygle St, to help speed up bus routes (with protected contraflow cycle lane). Further east, there would be one-way cycletracks on either side of the road. There was quite a lot of support for the cycle lanes but many points in the meeting came from blind people objecting to bus stop bypasses and raised road tables.

Council: Inverclyde.
Area: Part of upper Port Glasgow, west of Kilmacolm Rd/A761. Includes Bardrainney, Mid-Auchinleck and Slaemuir neighbourhoods.
Subject: As well as a 20mph zone this plan links into changes to NCN75. “The proposal is being supported by Sustrans Scotland as part of a proposal to reroute the National Cycle Route 75 along Auchenbothie Road.” Auchenbothie Road has a pink dashed line on the map, showing where traffic calming is planned. 1.2: Paisley Town Centre – Causeyside Street Regeneration

Council: Renfrewshire.
Area: Causeyside St and St Mirren St between Paisley Canal and Gilmour St train stations.
Subject: A potentially very useful link on a main road. A segregated cycletrack is proposed between the pedestrianised part of Gilmour St down Causeyside St to just past Stow Brae (where there’s a link to NCN75 at Telford’s). Renfrewshire Council removed some Spaces for People projects and have very little protected, on-road infrastructure. So, even though the proposed cycletrack would be 2-way, it’s still a big step forward for the area. Talk of keeping/adding car parking spaces may jar but it’s one less stick for critics to beat it with. There will still be many hurdles to clear, including accessibility and reaction from shoppers/shopkeepers. The plans are by Amey, better known for their trunk road work. That may explain the lack of trees and the convoluted junction south of Stow Brae.

1.3: Ayr to Prestwick Active Travel Route

Organisation: Ayrshire Roads Alliance (on behalf of South Ayrshire Council).
Subject: An upgraded “active travel route linking Ayr Esplanade to Prestwick Town Train Station will be proposed. It is envisaged that the proposed route will also connect to existing core paths in addition to future aspirational schemes such as Accessible Ayr, The Culzean Way and the Prestwick to Barassie Active Travel Route.” If it goes ahead, it would replace part of the current NCN7 along the coast, so has potential for cycle tourism as well as local journeys. There are photos of issues along the current route but no plans/visuals. So, it seems to be an early consultation to get comments (and maybe gauge demand?). If so, the more responses the better.

1.4: Connecting Battlefield

Council: Glasgow City.
Area: Battlefield Road, Grange Road, Langside Road and Queens Drive (between Queen’s Park and Mount Florida).
Subject: Relaunch of the former Battlefield Street Design project after a few years on hold during the pandemic. It features a uni-directional extension to the South City Way cycletrack running alongside Queen’s Park and down Battlefield Road. Also, there would be major changes to junctions at Queen’s Drive, Langside Rd and Battlefield Rest (removing a road between it and the old Victoria Hospital site). The consultation site mentions the Liveable Neighbourhood plans for Langside to Toryglen so hopefully these will dovetail with the Battlefield plans.

1.5: George Square & ‘Block C’ Avenues – ‘Our Place’

Council: Glasgow City.
Area: George Square and surrounding streets from Block C of the Avenues project.
Subject: The next step in consultation about the square and surroundings (last round was in Feb/Mar). New visualisations show the designers have got the message about more greenery. They’re an improvement on the current, quite barren square but are not the finished article. Which is just as well, since the shared spaces and road treatments at north and south look like they’d need more work. There are panels in the square for the public to view. Drop-in sessions will be held next to them on Saturday 6 August (1pm to 4pm) and Thursday 18 August (4pm to 7pm). There are two surveys – one for George Square and one for the proposed Avenues.

1.6: Greater Pollok Strategic Development Framework

Council: Glasgow City.
Area: South-western corner of Glasgow at edge of M77 and East Renfrewshire. Includes Leverndale, Nitshill, Priesthill and Darnley neighbourhoods.
Subject: The latest SDF follows others for North Glasgow, Inner East, etc. and looks at the economy, environment and transport over the next few decades. This part of Glasgow juts out between Barrhead and Thornliebank so connections with East Renfrewshire are important. It covers part of Dams to Darnley Country Park so has some things in common with the recent Barrhead consultation map. Also, Braidcraft Rd and Brockburn Rd have Spaces for People lanes (as does Corkerhill Rd to north). However, there are some hellish junctions around Silverburn Shopping Centre. Later in the year GCC should write a draft strategy for further consultation.

1.7: Greenock to Battery Park SfP lane

Council: Inverclyde.
Subject: A Spaces for People temporary route between Greenock town centre and a coastal park. A council vote was 9:2 in favour of keeping the lanes for another six months, with a further review in September. Photos in the consultation survey show a mixture of on-road ‘soft’ segregation and painted lanes on footways and across side roads. While some of the junction and bus stop treatments may not be ideal, there seem to be decent protected sections too.

Digest 34, Item 1.3 gives all the details for the proposed road closures around the time of the school day start and finish times for the 6 schools to be included in the pilot: Bankhead, Broomhill, Hillhead, Lourdes, Our Lady of the Rosary and St Blane’s. This is a good move by Glasgow City Council to cut down on the so-called “school run”, depriving children of a bit of fresh air and exercise on their journey to and from school. 1.5 Glasgow, Laurieston Phase 2 20mph Speed Limit Order 20_, closes 07 June

Laurieston, to the south of the Clyde, is being redeveloped with some very pleasant-looking housing, as we told you in Digest 34, Item 1.6 and Glasgow City Council, in another piecemeal application of 20mph in the city, propose a 20mph speed limit. Oh that they had the resources to enforce it, but we will be supporting the measure. Here’s our qualified letter of support.

1.6 Glasgow, Laurieston Phase 2 Trafffic Regulation Order 20_, Waiting and Loading, closes 07 June

Item 1.7 in Digest 34 gave all the details for this measure, but there are 2 concerns:

1. There appears to be a dire shortage of people who carry out enforcement of road traffic offences in the city, leading to many, many infringements
2. The official language around parking, waiting and stopping is confusing, as you will have seen if you read our recent blog-post “It’s time for ACTION on University Avenue” so it means that people will stop, but perhaps not wait, or park – but it’s still an obstruction for people cycling or trying to cross the road.

According to one guide this road marking means “You may stop to load, unload or for passengers to get in or out of the vehicle providing there are no signs saying so. Double yellow lines mean that there is to be no waiting at any time unless there are signs that specifically specify seasonal restrictions. “
Confusing or what? No wonder so there are so many lawyers advertising to help drivers accused of road traffic offences.

GoBike is supporting the measure but pointing out our concerns in this letter.

1.7 Glasgow, University Avenue and University Place, Traffic Regulation and Parking Controls, Order 201_, closes 07 June

Our concern about this proposal was given in both Digest 34, Item 1.8 and in our blog-post “It’s time for ACTION on University Avenue” and we will be submitting our objection prior to the 07 June deadline. 1.8 Glasgow, University Avenue and University Place, 20mph Speed Limit Zone, Order 201_ closes 07 June

Digest 34, Item 1.9 gave the details of this proposal for another piecemeal 20mph zone in the city and our concerns with this are about both the piecemeal nature of 20mph implementation in the city and enforcement. We will be submitting our letter of grudging support before the closing date, but we do wish drivers would observe traffic regulations – for all our sakes.

2.1 Glasgow, Battlefield, on-line public consultation 04 – 14 June and drop-in event (invitation only!) 06 June

We tell you below, in the next item, that work is progressing on the design for Battlefield.
On Thursday 6 June Sustrans are inviting “local residents, businesses, and groups who use the area along Langside Road, Grange Road, and Queen’s Drive to attend a focus group at Queen’s Park Bowling Club to view design proposals for this space. The proposals incorporate cycle segregation and look at improving pavement widths, bus stop locations, and simplifying junctions. Please find a postcard invitation attached with further details. The event is between 5 pm until 8 pm where you can drop-in and view the proposed designs and leave your feedback. Refreshments will be available too.
The designs will also be available online for the wider public to comment from 4^th to the 14^th June through the Sustrans project website” – https://battlefieldproposals.commonplace.is/.

3.1 Glasgow, Battlefield ongoing design works – update

The working group, including GoBike member, Eachann, is still meeting to discuss proposals for Battlefield and the southwards continuation of the South City Way. The latest news we have is that Sustrans will now concentrate on Design Option 1, linking Battlefield Rest to the old hospital site, see:

We are told that “Further design work will also take place on Langside Road and Grange road to connect the South City way with Battlefield. An update on this design work and the engagement around this will be provided at the next meeting.” This meeting will take place in the first week of June.

3.2 Workplace Parking Levy

In Digest 34, Item 1.10, John Finnie, MSP’s request to support the Parking Levy was outlined – hopefully some of you added your voice to the consultation, since it’s now closed. The results are out with almost 3 in 5 of us backing the levy, according to this report:

However, while John Finnie was concerned about Tory opposition, the same newspaper voices SNP opposition too. Aah, the vagaries of politics, but let’s just hope that we do get some of these motor vehicles off our streets.

3.3 Glasgow, City Centre Congestion Improvement response

Back in February, in Digest 28, Item 1.3 we gave details of Glasgow City Council’s proposals for “Congestion Improvement” (a curious term, but never mind) and we have, in this email of 14 May, received the outcome of their consultation:

I refer to your support of the above named Traffic Regulation Order and can advise that your support was reported and considered. The Council have decided under its scheme of delegated functions to proceed with the proposal as advertised.

The Order was made on 8 May 2019 and an advert was placed in the Evening Times on 13 May 2019 stating that the Traffic Regulation Order has been made.

Please note that the new signage, which will replace the existing signage, may be installed prior to the effective date (Sunday 30 June 2019). However, whilst the new signage would show the existing restrictions applying on a Sunday, enforcement of the new restrictions will not commence until Sunday 30 June 2019 at the earliest.
