People cycling near the white bike memorial to Emma Burke Newman at junction of Broomielaw and George V Bridge

At a crossroads?

As cycling competitions continue, grumbling goes on about temporary closures and restrictions. However, there’s a spotlight on permanent issues for active travel at junctions around the city. Most poignantly, there’s a fresh look at Broomielaw/Clyde St in memory of Emma Burke Newman. However, in Pollok there’s another rehash of a redesign (with a public event TODAY at 1pm).

There are two South Lanarkshire consultations, one from Ayrshire then the rest are all about Glasgow. One has fine words about urban sport (despite being called CUSS!). Meanwhile, in the East End, a new sporting venue could safeguard a local landmark. Will these count towards the legacy of the 2023 World Championships (and how will that compare to 2014)?

Sunday 06 August: GoBike cycle to Dumbarton

Join us on Sunday when we will head out of Glasgow along the Loch Lomond Railway Path, but only as far as Dumbarton. After the lunch stop at the café in the park there will be a tour around the Dumbarton area to see some of the local attractions, including views up and down the River Clyde, looking over towards the castle, and passing by Strathleven House, before rejoining the cycle route to return to Glasgow.

Waiting for the flag to drop.....

It’s less than a week until the UCI World Championships take place around Glasgow/Scotland. It’s the first combined event including every cycling discipline and should bring thousands of fans to the city. The UCI’s world champion colours are all over the city centre, including on stripey Cyclehangars. The City Council is using the spotlight to consult on a cycle sports strategy. Hopefully there’s more of a legacy for urban sports like BMX from this championship than there was from the Commonwealth Games.

This Digest also has two consultations from South Lanarkshire, one from South Ayrshire, a quick one from East Dunbartonshire and a long Framework from Glasgow.

Addition: Forthcoming consultation event

Pollok Roundabout redesign
Consultation event: Thurs 10 August, 1pm to 7pm at Pollok Civic Realm.

Packing up.

This issue goes out just ahead of the Glasgow Fair with consultations for Dennistoun, Calton and Pollok about to pack up for the holidays. Another for the national park ends soon and an Ayrshire seaside resort is looking to plan active travel routes. Dropping in at the last minute is a new strategy about BMX and skating in Glasgow.

Being prAGMatic?

The heat is on in June with tight deadlines and tight spaces in South Lanarkshire and Argyll & Bute. Also, updates from North Ayrshire and North Lanarkshire.

As the Argyle Street West TRO closes, an Avenues Plus consultation is due to open in the East End.

It’s also an important time for GoBike with our AGM on Saturday 3 June (World Bicycle Day!), our monthly ride on Sunday 4 June and then the Accessible and Inclusive Design Forum on the Monday.

Return of the City.

After a few issues led by other areas, Glasgow strikes back in this edition. A report on the City Network Delivery Plan offers new hope. Also, the former city ‘Cycling Village’ lands with new proposals (phase map shown, above – sadly the event for it has just passed). Elsewhere in the West End, there’s a Glasgow Uni event about its campus coming soon (see below).

Also, there are projects from South Lanarkshire, East Dunbartonshire and Renfrewshire plus reports from Loch Lomond & Trossachs National Park and East Renfrewshire.
