Byres Road Consultation Closing Soon

Hiya folks.

Just a reminder that the Byres Road public consultation closes on Wednesday 27th June. If you’ve not got your response in yet we would urge you to do so if you feel that properly segregated cycling is required in the plans. As a reminder, our response which you can use some of if you need is here.

The plans are online here, and the survey for responding to the consultation is here.

Thanks so much for your time and support on this.

Councillor Bike Tours – your help please!

Our Councillor Bike Ward Tours have started up again for the summer and we are looking for help and local knowledge as we start to book in our tours. Last years tours were really successful and we were able to show many councillors the good and bad in the cycling infrastructure in their wards, from the perspective of two (or in some cases more!) wheels. You can read all about it here.

If you would like to lead a tour, or help by accompanying another lead member, we’d love to hear from you. If you have a spare few hours to give out on your bike and would like to help, please get in touch with us on our #councillor_tours_gcc slack channel or via email on convenor@gobike.org

Bring your children, bring your bikes, and tell your friends!

GoBike Ride to Strathblane and Killearn – Sunday 3rd June

If our current glorious weather continues, this coming month’s GoBike ride is set to be a stunner, as we head north out of the city, to Strathblane and Killearn.

This ride will see us leaving Glasgow through Bearsden and Milngavie, and over the hill to Strathblane. We will then continue to Killearn and back via different routes, before returning to Glasgow via the Bears Way and Garscube Estate. On the way out, we will look at a cycle route being developed in Knightswood. A 37 mile round trip, with a rough section of track near Blanefield. GoBike Concerns For Byres Road Plans

GoBike are extremely concerned with plans that have gone public today on the redevelopment of Byres Road. While we are pleased to see improved space for people on foot, we believe that money spent on major projects such as this on busy roads should always also include segregated cycling infrastructure, safe for everyone of all ages and abilities, and that is not in evidence here. The cycle lanes in these plans appear to be nothing better than paint on the road and do not constitute “safe cycle routes” as promised.

From what we can see, the lanes proposed for Byres Road will force people on bikes into the stream of motor traffic each time the lanes are blocked by parking cars, buses, loading lorries and the inevitable debris usually swept to the side of the road. We plan to attend the drop in session tomorrow (Thursday) to ensure that we are armed with all the facts, but if you are also concerned with what you see and would like to do something about it, please meet us on Thursday evening (24th May) at 6pm, upstairs in the Curlers Rest.

Tea Brake! South City Way Thank You To Cycle Path Builders

GoBike campaigners, Friends of South City Way, and a group of local residents paid a visit to labourers working on a new cycle path on the south side of Glasgow today in a bid to thank them for making safe space for cycling. The peckish builders were treated to rolls and tattie scones lathered in brown sauce, with grateful volunteers bringing forth a selection of teas and coffees, as well as cakes and biscuits. If We Could All Change One Thing

Two weeks ago at Pedal on Parliament  in Edinburgh, cycle campaigner extraordinaire Sally Hinchcliffe shouted from the grassy knoll in front of the parliament building with a challenge for us all. Find one thing she said, one thing that makes it harder to cycle, something that you’d like to change in your local streets. And fight for it. See if you can change that one thing. And if we can all do that, she said, we can all make a big difference together.

That’s what we at GoBike aspire to. We are a collective of hundreds of members who all want to do something to change things for the better. Here is one of our members Steph, on what brought her to trying to make a difference. Continue reading “If We Could All Change One Thing”

News – Cycle Storage on Temporary Glasgow/Edinburgh Trains

We have had a notice in from Scotrail regarding cycle storage on trains between Glasgow and Edinburgh:

Information on the new electric trains (Class 385s)

As you may be aware from a number of articles published in the press over the last few months. Delays have occurred around the delivery of the new electric, class 385 trains, which in the future will run on routes between Edinburgh and Glasgow.

In order to support current service provision on this and other routes whilst we await the delivery of these new trains, ScotRail will be bringing into temporary service a number of class 365 trains. The 365 style of train does not have any dedicated or priority cycle storage and so ScotRail will be asking customers to place bikes in the vestibule areas as is common practice on some of our Strathclyde services. It is likely that class 365s will be implemented over the Summer and will run for a period of time until the 385s come into service.

GoBike believes that it is essential that space for bicycles is retained and will be keeping a close eye on these developments.
