If at first you don’t succeed…

Happy St Andrew’s Day.

Closing today – a consultation in Argyll and Bute plus two Liveable Neighbourhood plans for the Southside of the city.

Glasgow also has a glut of guidance, frameworks and traffic orders. North Lanarkshire looks at speed limits in Seven Lochs Wetland Park. Renfrewshire has a few more tries at taming traffic.

We’re still working on the new Digest (apologies for any stray test posts last week).

Looking ahead…

Another shorter Digest for now while GoBike looks at a new way of producing these. There are both longer term strategies and more local consultations in this issue. Also, an update from Glasgow about more ups and downs for the Avenues programme.

Some Thoughts on the Proposals for the North East Active Travel Routes (NEATR)

Wallacewell Rd Spaces for People lanes

By Alasdair Macdonald, GoBike member

I was disappointed by recent unbalanced coverage of Glasgow City Council proposals to develop North East Active Travel Routes (NEATR) in the Springburn area. Glasgow Times reported on a local group, supported by two Labour councillors, which was opposed to the plans. The reporting focused on cycle lanes on Wallacewell Road (ironically, championed by a previous Labour councillor). However, it ignored the wider plans for the area.

Gearing up in active mobility – attending the Cycling Scotland Conference 2023

This week, I had the opportunity to attend the Cycling Scotland Conference 2023. This years’ theme was “Cycling towards a healthier, fairer, safer and greener Scotland”. At first glance this is a lot of adjectives to cover in one day. However, underlying these words is a focus in active mobility – people. Curious to see where these words may overlap, I’m excited to share with you an overview of the day.

Consultation Digest (Local) Issue 147, 4 November 2023

City Centre Strategy graphic

Running on empty…

Unfortunately, this Digest is even later than other recent issues as it’s become a struggle for your author to find time for them. This issue has less info than previous ones so it’s quicker to produce. The format of the Digest will have to change further to make it sustainable in future.

November’s GoBike ride, 05 November, is going Halfway and back

Toryglen Rd entrance to Malls Mire

This ride will see us meeting, as usual, near the north end of Bell’s Bridge at 10:00 and then only going (to) Halfway! We will head along the riverside to Glasgow Green, then onto the recently upgraded East City Way through Parkhead.

Consultation Extra: City Centre & SPT Active Travel Strategies (20-10-23)

Glasgow city centre development night-time visualisation

A few strategies missed out on the recent Digest, including the Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) Active Travel Strategy. The council’s City Centre Strategy came out the day after the Digest but is obviously important for Glasgow…

Out of the rubble…

As destruction dominates the news abroad and in parts of the UK, there’s little solace to be found. However, this issue has a few consultations with plans for new construction following demolitions in North Glasgow and North Ayrshire. Also, renewal for a town centre in South Lanarkshire. In Glasgow, there are plans for city centre junctions and a ‘conversation’ event in the Southside. Elsewhere, there’s a one-way system proposed in Renfrewshire.

Govan to Partick bridge – major progress

On recent GoBike rides (first Sunday of each month) we have called in to see progress on the construction of this bridge, which will link Govan and Partick. Yesterday morning (Saturday 14 October) as two of us cycled out to Bowling, we noted the appearance of a yellow crane.

Wheels turning…

As the engine revving goes on in Westminster, active travel consultations continue in the West of Scotland. One is for infrastructure that could be seen as levelling up for the North(-East of Glasgow). There’s more voting in the East End and Southside as locals have a say in how to spend funding. There are other city plans and town centre transformations in South Lanarkshire and Renfrewshire.
