Glasgow City Council propose to install traffic lights at the Paisley Road West/Tweedsmuir Road/Cardonald Place Road Junction, with a contraflow cycle lane on Cardonald Place Road.  We have proposed that they also make the cycle lane mandatory, put cycle markings across the junction to alert motorists to cyclists and provide a 5-second advance time at the traffic lights for cyclists.  Consultation closes on Thursday 19 February.  If you support our proposals you can see our letter here and please write into the City Council with your views.

 

Glasgow City Council have announced plans to change the junction arrangements at the top of Napiershall Street, where it meets Maryhill Road at the Community Central Halls.  We like most of the proposals but object to the proposed introduction of kerbside parking on Maryhill Road just to the left of Napiershall Street.

Bob Downie of GoBike will be talking to Kaye Adams on Morning Call on Radio Scotland tomorrow morning, ie Wednesday 11 February, about the current petition to bring in a default 20mph speed limit on most of Glasgow’s road.

If you have a Glasgow address, PLEASE SIGN THIS PETITION to improve the environment in our city.  The closing date is shown as 07 March so please sign as soon as you can (we have asked for this date to be extended because of the delay in approval but we can’t guarantee that).

Glasgow City Council have, to date, refused to allow a petition calling for a 20mph speed limit to be the norm  on the city’s streets on the grounds they are already doing enough!  This article in today’s Herald quotes Bob Downie’s (pictured centre) findings that, under their current rate of progress, it will take 37 years to reach the same level as Edinburgh aims to achieve in 3!

It’s an excellent article on page 11 of the Herald, with a taster on page 1.  Do read it and do write into the Herald, with a copy to your councillors, expressing your disappointment at this move to prevent us voicing our opinion that we want a healthy, active and safe environment in our city.

 

Glasgow City Council propose to extend the 30mph limit on Kennishead Road to a point 450m east of Boydstone Road.  This is good news and our response to the consultation may be seen here

We received a reply to our initial objections to the changes proposed to this route on 27 January.  We have maintained some of our points of objection but have welcomed the offer to discuss this scheme further with Glasgow City Council.  Our response is on our website and may be seen here

It’s a great ride, 47 miles from Glasgow to Edinburgh, with closed roads and plenty of company, refreshments too.

If you don’t fancy travelling east, though, since it’s the first Sunday of the month, it’ll be the day for the regular GoBike ride from Glasgow.

Over the past year I have been working with a range of organisations to establish the Glasgow to Barrhead Community Rail Partnership. A Community Rail Partnership is partnership of local organisations and businesses working closely with the railway industry to maximise potential benefits of the location, line and community. This can include enhancing station facilities, improving access (walking, cycling and disabled access) to stations, promoting local attractions to encourage more locals and tourist to access these by train along with any other positive opportunities that would benefit the communities along the line.

Late last year I had discussions with other organisations in and around the south of Glasgow and the concept of a creating a broader Southside Routes Community Rail Partnership has emerged. I would like to hold a meeting on Thursday 19 February from 10.15 to 12.30 to discuss this concept further. The meeting will be held at South West Community Cycles which is based at the Pollokshaw West Train Station. The meeting room is straight off the platform heading out of Glasgow. I will put a sign on the door in the morning.

The main aims of the meeting will be to discuss:

• whether we all agree to work together to establish a Southside Routes CRP
• what the boundary of a Southside Routes CRP might be (for Barrhead and Neilston to be included it would be roughly 30 minutes from Glasgow Central Station but what other lines should we consider including)
• How the CRP might be structured to meet the needs of the local communities (what subgroups of the CRP might there need to be ie station adopters, marketing/promotion, active travel plus other possible working groups)

Please let me know if you are able to attend the meeting. If you are able to attend and would like a ScotRail pass to travel to the meeting please let me know your name, departing station and a postal address to send the pass to by Thursday 12 February to ensure it arrives in time.
