Strathclyde Cycle Campaign
Yes, it will be September tomorrow, but let’s hope this good weather lasts until the weekend.
We’ll be doing a tour through some very varied parts of the south of the city and its outskirts, with a wee bit of climbing, but back in the city after 20 miles in time for lunch.
Meet at the north end of Bell’s Bridge for 10:00 on Sunday 03 September and see further details of this and forthcoming rides here.
Here’s the up and downy route that Andy took us on last Sunday. The ride started, as per usual, at the north end of Bell’s Bridge and we cycled out via Bellahouston Park and Mosspark, skirted Neilston and arrived at Gleniffer Braes from where we had a superb view of the Clyde Valley to the west of the city, a good place for our break.

We will head southwest out of Glasgow, passing through Bellahouston and Pollok. We will pick up paths alongside the Levern Water and follow these into Barrhead. Then we’ll climb up the hill out of the town, before ending up at the Gleniffer Braes.

We will head off through Cathcart and Linn Park, and head out through Carmunnock to get to the outskirts of East Kilbride (avoiding trunk roads such as the A726). We’ll take a little time to explore the K-Woodlands, before joining a cycle route into the town centre to see the new cycle infrastructure there. After continuing across town, we will return to Glasgow, descending through Castlemilk and King’s Park, where we might just see Aitkenhead House, shown in the photo, just in time for lunch.
Due to road and path closures, there will be a couple of short sections of the ride that will be on main roads.
25 miles, including some off-road paths and steps in the K-Woodlands.
Meet 10am north end of Bell’s Bridge, Congress Road, Glasgow.

Glasgow City Council’s adoption of its new Active Travel Strategy is a great step towards making the city’s streets safe and inviting for vulnerable road users, and GoBike warmly welcomes it.
Adopting the strategy can only be a starting point. For years, the way Glasgow City Council and Police Scotland have dealt with proposals for contraflow cycling has made cycling less inviting as a travel choice.
Contraflow cycling (exempting cycles from one-way restrictions, see endnote) is safe.

We have certainly been well battered by storms this month and I guess it’s curtailed a few planned rides. As well as a windy month it’s also been a very busy time for both policy consultations and local elections planning ahead of the 5 May polls.
