This Digest covers most points of the compass in Glasgow and neighbouring areas to the west, south and east.

In this Digest there’s a mix of consultations from Glasgow and from all directions outside the city. Most are over before late March, which will mark six weeks until the Scottish Parliament election. This is the Public Sector’s ‘purdah’ pre-election period when projects tend to avoid new announcements (which could get caught up in electioneering).
That may be why there’s been a flurry of news about the next lot of Glasgow’s Spaces for People projects – including Howard St, Cambridge St and Royston Rd. GoBike first heard about these at the revived Glasgow Active Travel Forum, which met for the first time online earlier this month (previous meeting was Sept 2019!).

Cycling around the city reminds us that GoBike supported the proposed ban on pavement parking in Scotland and we supported the Deposit Return Scheme to, hopefully, get some of the glass off our streets. That’s Glasgow where we have on one side the positivity of the Avenues, the Development Regeneration Frameworks and advance news of the latest developments for Byres Road, while in residential areas we have a more outdated and reactive response to speeding traffic and the storage of private cars. There are currently four new proposals for traffic calming using the only method the City Council appears to know, ie speed cushions and we have the Council’s defence of proposals for the storage of private vehicles on our public roads all militating against active travel. This Digest contains only one new consultation but it’s a big one, from Transport Scotland and there is a surprising amount of feedback, finishing with the excellent news that Yorkhill and Kelvingrove Community Council have been successful in gaining funding for their cycling village. Also, fascinating feedback that demonstrates a lack of overall compliance with aspirations for active travel, with contraflow cycling denied yet again in the west of Glasgow and ongoing concern about University Avenue.
