Join us on Sunday, 10:00, for a 15 mile tour of the south and south-west of Glasgow. We meet at the north end of Bell’s Bridge and if you don’t know that part of the city too well or haven’t seen the changes to the cycle infrastructure or just want a bit of fresh air before the rest of your Sunday, then this is the ride for you.

Peter Hayman, who has long been an active and effective GoBike campaigner, is a true cycling legend. Today, the 28th of March, he turns 80, and to celebrate his birthday, he is planning a hefty 80 mile cycle ride. For this adventure (and Peter is no stranger to adventures), he hopes to cycle to the coast via his previous homes in the West of Scotland and through the home town of his adopted football club, Kilmarnock FC, before returning to Glasgow.
Continue reading “A cycling legend: An 80 mile bike ride for an 80th birthday.”Many of us have sorely missed the monthly GoBike rides, planned and led by Andy Preece, but cancelled to prevent the spread of Covid 19, in line with government restrictions. However, we have an abundance of new infrastructure in Glasgow because of these very restrictions (although, sadly, some of it might only be temporary – unless we campaign to keep it!)
To encourage us all to get out to see these new facilities we are delighted and very grateful that Andy has come up with not one, but three rides.

News just in from our members who are also Sustrans volunteers. Emergency works to repair a fault in cabling which is linked to the local hospital power supply have started today between Portpatrick Road and Bowling on the Forth and Clyde Canal and are expected to close the canal side cycle route for a week.
If you were thinking of heading that way over the weekend or next week a new route will be needed. There is no indication of an alternative diversionary route on the information we have – sorry.
Cycling around the city reminds us that GoBike supported the proposed ban on pavement parking in Scotland and we supported the Deposit Return Scheme to, hopefully, get some of the glass off our streets. We’ve done a check and have updates for you, see Section 3, though the news could be better, plus updates from north, west and south of Glasgow and Motherwell. Do read on.

Plus a request to contribute to the Streets for All Glasgow Commonplace Map, and more.”We regret to announce that in line with Cycling UK guidance, we have taken the decision to suspend our monthly GoBike rides until further notice.
Current advice does outline that while group rides are not advised, cycling individually is safe. In an open letter sent out on Tuesday to the UK Government, 16 leading academics have outline why “Walking and cycling can be compatible with social distancing if people are responsible.” The World Health Organisation have also given it a green light.
We will head out of Glasgow along the Loch Lomond Railway Path, but only as far as Dumbarton. After the lunch stop there will be a tour around the Dumbarton area to see some of the local attractions, including passing Strathleven House, before returning to Glasgow.

The furthest extent of the ride will be Robroyston with its new station, and Hogganfield Loch. We will also visit the canal at Hamiltonhill, Sighthill regeneration site, Tollcross Park, the Cuningar Loop park, the Polmadie Bridge, Govanhill Park, and finally end up at the Tradeston Bridge.

As our Digest enters not only its second half-century, but a new decade, this seems a good time to encourage any of you out there who are not yet GoBike members to join us. GoBike is only as strong as its members. We are people who recognise the need for good cycle infrastructure and so we campaign for it. We receive no public funding, have no paid employees, and are run entirely by volunteers, but we do have enthusiastic members who are pleased to get involved and/or pay our minimum fee of £5 per year (and many pay more). Do please join us but also read on for the news, including the long-awaited Byres Road TROs, we have for you.
