Wheels turning…

As the engine revving goes on in Westminster, active travel consultations continue in the West of Scotland. One is for infrastructure that could be seen as levelling up for the North(-East of Glasgow). There’s more voting in the East End and Southside as locals have a say in how to spend funding. There are other city plans and town centre transformations in South Lanarkshire and Renfrewshire.

Proposed plan of East Kilbride town centre

Edgy centres…

There are plans for redeveloping both towns and neighbourhood centres in this issue. Information varies from big budget visuals in South Lanarkshire to the ‘secret squirrel’ approach in Renfrewshire. Many of them are in areas which don’t always get the spotlight, either in the ‘shires’ or the edges of the city. Even the latest Avenues project is at the edge of the city centre. Also, there’s a less edgy (but important) city strategy and North Lanarkshire’s development plan and new crossings. Plus, a Dutch-style junction comes to East Renfrewshire…

Engagement and replacement…

There are two very different replacement projects in this (belated) issue. Pollok Roundabout proposals would replace one car-centric design with another. However, plans for the replacement Monklands Hospital, Airdrie include an active travel path and bridge.

Another duo of Liveable Neighbourhood consultations return with plans to comment on – this time it’s Royston to Hogganfield and Yoker to Whiteinch. There’s also a pair of pre-consultations with both Glasgow and East Renfrewshire asking how best to engage the public.

Elsewhere, it’s last call for the Hairmyres station consultation, South Lanarkshire’s Transport Strategy and Drumchapel’s Local Development Framework. The Waiting to Happen and Doon Valley consultations continue.

People cycling near the white bike memorial to Emma Burke Newman at junction of Broomielaw and George V Bridge

At a crossroads?

As cycling competitions continue, grumbling goes on about temporary closures and restrictions. However, there’s a spotlight on permanent issues for active travel at junctions around the city. Most poignantly, there’s a fresh look at Broomielaw/Clyde St in memory of Emma Burke Newman. However, in Pollok there’s another rehash of a redesign (with a public event TODAY at 1pm).

There are two South Lanarkshire consultations, one from Ayrshire then the rest are all about Glasgow. One has fine words about urban sport (despite being called CUSS!). Meanwhile, in the East End, a new sporting venue could safeguard a local landmark. Will these count towards the legacy of the 2023 World Championships (and how will that compare to 2014)?

Waiting for the flag to drop.....

It’s less than a week until the UCI World Championships take place around Glasgow/Scotland. It’s the first combined event including every cycling discipline and should bring thousands of fans to the city. The UCI’s world champion colours are all over the city centre, including on stripey Cyclehangars. The City Council is using the spotlight to consult on a cycle sports strategy. Hopefully there’s more of a legacy for urban sports like BMX from this championship than there was from the Commonwealth Games.

This Digest also has two consultations from South Lanarkshire, one from South Ayrshire, a quick one from East Dunbartonshire and a long Framework from Glasgow.

Addition: Forthcoming consultation event

Packing up.

This issue goes out just ahead of the Glasgow Fair with consultations for Dennistoun, Calton and Pollok about to pack up for the holidays. Another for the national park ends soon and an Ayrshire seaside resort is looking to plan active travel routes. Dropping in at the last minute is a new strategy about BMX and skating in Glasgow.

Duke St - option 1: a 2-way cycleway on southern side of road

Bright sun and dark shadows.

As we move into summer holiday time (and Pride month) some new consultations are coming out. The biggest in this issue is the final section of Glasgow’s Avenues Plus project – Duke St and John Knox St. Also, another look at plans for Bishopbriggs town centre. Elsewhere it’s North Ayrshire, North Lanarkshire and Loch Lomond.

Sadly May ended with news of a serious collision on Fielden St, Glasgow with a car driver reportedly hitting a cyclist. Tragically, John Morton died in hospital from his injuries on 4 June. GoBike would like to offer sincere condolences to John’s family and friends.
