Splitscreen view of Charing-Cross now and proposed plan

Events dear boy, events…

Two drop-in events on today – one for Liveable Neighbourhoods in Dennistoun, Glasgow. The other for a funding bid at the Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility, North Lanarkshire. More events to come for St George’s Rd, Glasgow and in East Renfrewshire for the Clarkston and Eaglesham Local Action Plans.

The most eye-catching plans in this issue are for St George’s Rd and Charing Cross. As part of Connecting Woodside, it’s due to link to the existing route on Garscube Rd.

Byres Rd plans at University Ave

Holiday time.

After a flurry of consultations since the local elections, things have slowed down for summer holidays. However, there’s an important Order to pave the way for protected bike lanes on Byres Road (hopefully sooner rather than later).

Elsewhere, the City Wharf pre-application closes soon. Consultations on East City Way and East Ren’s guidance are open for a bit longer. Greater Pollok still has months to go, which is handy since the map only has a dozen responses so far. Also, Greenock’s Spaces for People consultation is still open. Added: consultations for Ayr/Prestwick and Battlefield, Glasgow.

City Wharf site plan with street names

East End bikes, West End bus

This issue is split between a few East Renfrewshire consultations and one for the East City Way (by the velodrome, ahead of next year’s World Championships). There’s a consultation for ‘Greater Pollok’, in the south-west of Glasgow, and five ‘bus corridors’ on the western side of the city (no longer ‘Sustainable Transport Corridors’?).

Also, a new development is planned next to the shared path under the Kingston Bridge (see site plan in image, above). Plus feedback on moves to cap Charing Cross (or maybe even replace the city centre M8?).

A visualisation of the proposed A77 Active Corridor, Phase 2

All points East (Ren)

This Digest is dominated by consultations for East Renfrewshire. (The last issue should have included some of them too – apologies.) Five area consultations use Commonplace maps, similar to Glasgow’s Liveable Neighbourhoods (one of which is still open). Other East Ren projects are for a section of Ayr Rd (A77) and supporting documents for the council’s Local Development Plan 2 (LDP2). It’s almost as if ERC have some new active travel staff…

Elsewhere, Inverclyde still have a survey open on a Spaces for People route. Also, a consultation is due to open in June about a gap site by the Clyde…

Visualisation showing redevelopment phase 1, now up to 7 storeys

Building back up…

The Digest returns after an extended break for the local council elections (and some tech issues – apologies). The people in charge of a council have a big say in what gets done so it’s worth noting what has (and hasn’t) changed.

Glasgow City Council continues in minority SNP control, with added support from the Greens. However, Anna Richardson has stepped down from her Sustainability role. Instead, the convenor of the Environment, Sustainability and Carbon Reduction City Policy Committee is Elaine McSporran (Cardonald).

Elsewhere, many neighbouring councils have changed hands:

Plans for segregated cycletracks on Cornwall St/Churchill Ave, East Kilbride

Consultation resurrection?

Happy Easter! Things are a bit dead, before numbers rise again after the election, so it’s a chance to bring back consultations that slipped through the net in the last few months. The 12 local authorities in the Strathclyde area don’t always let us know what they’re up to!

This issue features East Ayrshire and West Dunbartonshire for the first time in a while. North Ayrshire and Inverclyde still have consultations open. Also, regulars like Glasgow, East Renfrewshire and South Lanarkshire. The latter had a consultation that fell between Digest issues (see featured image, above) and sent a new update on NCN74.

Also, ahead of the local elections, check out Walk, Wheel, Cycle, Vote and consider a trip to Edinburgh for Pedal on Parliament‘s new route on 23 April (just after Earth Day).

Ayr Rd A77 cycle lane protected by rows of wand bollards

Coming unstuck?

After praising East Renfrewshire Council for sticking with their temporary bollards on the A77, they now have a consultation about removing them! It has a tight deadline before the official pre-election period starts.

There’s even less time to respond about active travel hubs in North Lanarkshire. NHS Lanarkshire have published plans for the new Monklands Hospital in Airdrie, including active travel paths. Also, North Lanarkshire Council have a TRO about parking at schools.

In Glasgow, the George Square consultation ends soon. The next Liveable Neighbourhoods consultation starts for Yorkhill to Anderston. In contrast, construction for the South West City Way Extension hasn’t started due to an issue between the council and contractors. There are also a few TROs for Glasgow and East Dunbartonshire.

Plan of George Square showing statues repositioned

March-ing Orders & musical statues?

The Public Sector is getting close to its ‘end of year’ in March. That may explain why half a dozen new Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs) have just been published. Also, an older Order was passed for 20mph on Byres Rd in the West End. A few TROs are for Spaces for People measures in Glasgow. Obviously, none of East Dunbartonshire’s TROs are for SfP (as the only mainland Scottish council not to put in a bid).

‘What do we want for our city’s front room?’ – asks the latest George Square consultation. Elsewhere, North Lanarkshire is sounding people out about two active travel hubs and East Renfrewshire is sticking to its guns.

Let’s go round again.

A repeat consultation for Pollok and next steps at an Ayrshire harbour (in time for Burns Night). Also, South Lanarkshire’s Ayr Road (A70) pops up again.

After criticism of Spaces for People measures in South Lanarkshire and Renfrewshire, now East Renfrewshire‘s Ayr Road (A77) completes the hat-trick.

Side-by-side crossing at Brouster Hill, East Kilbride

Season’s greetings

This time of year is known for excess and there’s a glut of consultations and responses in this issue. Contra-flow cycling is a theme with responses from Glasgow ruling it out while South Lanarkshire have quietly implemented it in East Kilbride.

However, EK’s Spaces for People project (as seen in featured image, above) is up for consultation and needs support to counter local criticism.

Without wanting to tread on the toes of our national consultations digest, Transport Scotland’s long-delayed pavement parking consultation has started. Most GoBike members will have experiences to add to that!
